Even if you don't buy collision, comp is worth having. Consider though, my 11 Escape was hit in a parking lot while no one was in it and the insurance company insisted it was a collision- meaning I had a bigger deductible. I thought it should be covered under comp because I feel that damaging a car and leaving is vandalism and a stationary vehicle can't collide with anything. Obviously, I couldn't change their mind.
I wouldn't worry about buying a first year vehicle, I bought a new 81 Escort and a new 95 Contour and both were fine, quality now is much better.
Recalls aren't a negative, they're free upgrades for faults that Ford owns up to.
