My idea of a Shelby Ranger if there would have been one.

so you think it was a vac leak?

I think it very well could have been from the looks of the inside of the TB but not sure though... Like I said I'm not getting my hopes up yet... The funny thing is I found someone else who said the same thing about their 92 4.0. He said it use to get 400 miles to a tank and now it's getting 300... He claimed it was after a plug and wire change that his started to suck.... :dunno:

Someone here at work suggested the temp sensor... If it was that wouldn't it stay in open loop?

I know from past experience that platinum plugs will lower the fuel mileage, I put them in a Cougar I had, and it sucked gas down, I went back to copper plugs and my mileage came back up.

Also, My father-in-law put them in his 94 Explorer, it then only got around 12 miles per gallon, I put coppers back in his, and it jump back to around 19 to 20 miles per gallon.

Unless the vehicle calls for a special plug (like platinum plugs) I always use copper like the mfg. calls for.

yeah, i've always heard platnium are not a good plug for ford motors, same with a lot of brands (there were some named specifically)

i grew up with more than 1 person telling me ford motors need autolite plugs to run optimally, and no platinum unless it specifically calls for it

She has Platnum plugs in it... I'll put regular copper plugs in and see what she does..

First I want to say Thank you to all the guys that have helped with the truck figuring stuff out and throwing out suggestions.. I really appreciate all of you.. But I have sold the truck..... Nah just kidding.. I did throw in a new Temp sensor as I read they can get lazy with age and not report the correct temp to the ECM.. I also threw in a sending unit just for good measure... We'll see what the sensor and plugs do... Should I go ahead and kill the ECM's power for a while and let it reset though??? Really thanks guys I do appreciate ALL of you!!

i would let the ecm relearn it self after the install of new parts..i thought the 4.0 came with platinum plugs factory i problly am wrong.

You may be right Country to an extent.. Remember there are two versions of the 4.0 The OHV and the OHC.. The OHC very well could have as they are newer engines and I don't know a thing aout them. I am running a OHV so I know mine didn't...

I was told by the parts guy i deal with to run platinum motorcrafts in my OHV and i do with no issues :dunno:

in fact i had copper champion plugs in before and i kept having issues

Beats me all I know is mine gets sucky MPGs and I have no idea why... Right now I'll try damn near anything... I had no issues running the platinums myself.. She ran and still runs great.. She just likes to drink gas like I like to drink Jack and coke...

i remember being told that the ohv in the ranger and whatever they used in the windstar were nortorious for being picky about plugs

1990-1996 uses SP486 (Platinum) (old part number is AWSF42P)
1997-2000 uses SP500 (Platinum) (old part number is AGSF22PP) or SP413 (Premium Nickel)
2001-2005 uses SP498 (Platinum) (old part number is AGSF34FP) or SP412 (Nickel)

Spark Plug (Motorcraft)

Important Note: The SOHC spark plug is about 1/4 inch longer then that of the OHV. The OHV plug will fit but it won't operate properly.

gotta love the top result in google for "4.0 sohc plug specs" bringing you right to TRS tech library! :D

If you are not having issues now it's got nothing ti do with the new plugs being platinum. You changed from Champion to Motorcraft is where your improvement came from. Every Ford I (and my dad) have ever been around ran best with motorcraft/autolite coppers, with the sole exception of the Probe I had it actually called for and ran best on NGK plugs. Just like to point out that includes a '68 F-100, 84 Ranger, 90 BII, '92 (I think) Tempo, '94 F-150, '99 Ranger, 02 Ranger (two of them) and an '02 Taurus. There have also been many older Fords my dad had before I was born including a Pinto, a few falcons, and a mustang. Personally, I've never put Champion plugs in an auto engine. Was told by my dad (there he is again noticing a trend?) that he never had anything but problem with Champion's auto plugs. He'll use them in lawn equipment when he can't get an NGK, and they make great aircraft plugs, but their automotive division sucks.
