Well,
After procrastinating for awhile, I finally decided to
stop relying on the odometer on my '84 Bronc II and
drop the tank and change out the sending unit.
I vowed I would never go through another winter
without a working gauge. The new one arrived
last week, so change out was in the horizon.
Driving to work last Friday, I ran out maybe 30
feet from the gas station ! So, if that's not a sign....
I manage a rental store that used to be a small
car dealership,so I pulled it in that night and up on jack
stands it went. Had the usual fights with skid plate
bolts and strap bolts for the tank, 25 years of corrosion...
enlisting air hammers, a sawzall, bolt cutters.
I had only put a couple of gallons in that a.m. anticipating
the drop. I interupted my usual NFL viewing yesterday and went out
and got it to the floor in about an hour. No shock, the
float was full of holes, completely shot. Which was kinda
nice to know the problem was obvious and not gonna have to
fight tracing wiring issues etc. New shocks will be installed,
and I scored a hitch for 25 bucks, what better time for those
items to be put on. My main problem is the female plug for the
electrical connection for the sender is in about the same shape as the float.
Of course, none of my local parts outlets have it, and has been
long discontinued by Ford. Does anyone have any idea where I
could score one? Am guessing the junkyard won't have one in much
better shape, and they are a bit of a drive from me anyway.
Am thinking of just soldering the wires and covering it with silicone..
might be an option. Can't wait to view my gauge actually working !!!
