With just 15 miles shy of 250,000 miles, and 200 miles on a M5OD swap, coming back from work yesterday I downshifted to second and ran it up to 5k, then shifted to third and fourth and let off the gas. Few seconds later I see blue smoke pouring out the back, crap!!!!

Pull over and the engine is bleeding oil all over the pavement. :shok: Shut it off thinking it might have blown something, but the block looked complete and I couldnt locate the leak. Turned it back on and it idled perfectly, looked again and found the leak, the oil pressure switch had failed internally and was blowing oil out the side of its body!

Being on an elevated parkway and half a mile from the nearest street, I got back in and drove it slowly to the nearest gas station. Being only one mile from my apt, I quickly put in a few quarts to bring the level back to slightly over normal and drove it home.

I bought a new oil pressure switch and put it in today. In about 2 miles of driving, it lost about 5 quarts total between the two trips, good thing I was able to top it off halfway! It was a rough, rough ride home I have to say! Hopefully despite the leak it was able to supply enough pressure to the upper galleries, but only time will tell.

About 5 months back I had a similar scare but mine was oil blown out the rear main seal. It is heart stopping when you see that blue smoke.

Wow, what a scare!

Glad you got it back together. And definitely a good thing that you topped it off when you could. Hopefully you don't suffer oil starvation effects...

At 250K, I'd say she's lived a good life. She hiccuped, but she'll be fine. When was her last tune up?

I'm guessing it probably had to do with me revving it higher than normal, raising the oil pressure to levels that the sensor wasnt used to, and after so many years and heat, probably didnt take much to make it fail.

Next oil change I'll run some seafoam through it, hopefully this wasnt caused by a plugged oil passage which let too much pressure build up at the sensor.

At about 245k :icon_rofl: We bought it at 240,575 miles with a supposed blown engine, ran fine though, after a few thousand miles we figured we'd do at least a basic tune-up since it was obviously NOT blown lol. It runs amazingly well, idle is a bit rougher with a/c on, but with a/c off it runs very smoothly. We'll keep pushing it until it finally goes out, hopefully no-time soon! :D
