I swapped a 03 sohc into my 99 and i could not figure out why it was running so rich. I used the MAF off my 02 2.3 duratec because the part number was the same as a 03 4.0's. I wasn't until after several hours of diagnostics work we realize the differen't diameter off the actual MAF housing was causing the computer to think that more air was coming in because the smaller duratec housing caused the velocity of the air to increase and the computer dumped more fuel to compensate.

You got it working now?

yeah my buddy had an extra MAF housing laying around the shop what was the correct diameter for a 4.0

It happens. It is something that is easily overlooked. Glad you figured it out.

replaced both oxygen sensors, thinking it was the cause. but they were cheap because i got them at the shops cost, and new oxygen sensors cant hurt
