I owe you a cup of coffee. After spending a lot of time last fall (2017) trying to get the interior lights to turn off in "Gertrude" my1998 Ranger. I pulled all of the bulbs and threw them into the side tray.
I decided to put LEDs in everywhere and started to tackle the problem of lights that would not go off when I read your post. Guess what knothead turned his dimmer swith all the way up last fall? I hope this finds you in good health.

This morning everything was a-ok with Baby, my 1993 Ranger. This afternoon the dome lights will not turn off and the back cab lights are also staying on. Will the WD 40 work on both? It rained cats and dogs this morning.

And, did you. Check your dimmer switch?

I flashed the headlights at the puppy sitting whining at the fence...but that switch in in the dash. I did not use the dimmer which is on the steering column. We removed the + cable from the battery so she would not run down overnight. It's still raining like all get out. If the dimmer switch does not work -as opposed to the headlights working- then what does that mean?

I wasn't talking about the headlight dimmer (high/low beam switch). I was talking about the dimmer for instrument panel lights. Ie; rotating the light switch knob on the dash which dims or brightens the dash lights and turns on the dome/cargo lights. Assuming your '93 is similar to mine.

my fix

i replaced the plunger switch in the door jamb. it worked.

I had this problem on my Explorer one day. I had just cleaned out the interior, and was driving it to the car wash when I noticed that the dome lights were on. Out of fear that I would drain the battery, I removed all five dome light bulbs in the truck. I discovered the problem a few hours later, no WD-40 required......I had accidently turned the dimmer switch all the way up, turning the dome lights on. Lesson: check the stupid stuff first!

Stood outside slamming my car door for half an hour before I read this response. I too was bamboozled by a trip to the car wash. Should have checked the stupid stuff first!
