last night windows 7 decided to crash, i have no idea why. i was playing rigs of rods when it froze then the comp un-fronze and restarted. came up with the flashing line to enter text like always. after 10 mins nothing happen'd. so i did a complete factory restore.

taking me back to 6 years ago and windows xp. my friend took out the original graphics card which was a cheep nvidia. so 3 quarters of the way thru it stopped at installing the nvidia card and drivers. i went to sleep, 4 hours later it was still at the same spot. so i manually shut it down.

it seems to install correctly but then once i try to install and java it decided to fail and say it would not accept them.

so i threw in a yucky windows vista disk to get it goin. it installed fine. allbeit being slow as hell i downloaded avg. about 3 quarters of the way through avg installation it froze i waited 30 mins it hadent moved so i pushed the button yet again for a manual restart then it moved. then just as it got to the end of the install the computer shut down.

me having the short fuze temper i have chucked my htc cell phone at my screen exploding the touch screen. i left went for a walk. came back mom said the comp had restarted 6 times on its own. so now im going back to old faithful.

ubuntu 10.10, never had any problems with this os and ive always loved it. its always worked quicker than windows for me no matter what i did. plus its 100% virus free, according to there site.

Sounds like bad ram and/or hard drive. disable the auto reboot on system failure to get a better idea of whats going on.
Also it sounds like you've had this machine a long time. IF YOU KNOW HOW, replace the heatsink grease/pad on the CPU.
manufacturers only use a small piece of compound tape that dries up after a couple of yrs.
clean this off and apply a light amount of "arctic silver 5" to the top of the CPU chip.

Ok, NEXT time you reinstall Win7, after you have everything, all your data and applications re-installed and set the way you want it...

CLONE the OS install to another identical Hard drive.

How Old is the HDD you have now? the fact that it "Factory Restores" to Windows XP
indicates to me that it's pretty old... 3-4 years?

I think now is the time to buy TWO NEW hard drives (a 320gb HD hard drive is only about $45) and while you are at it buy an external HDD enclosure for your original Hard drive.

Also while you are re-installing the OS use the installer disc to DELETE the "Factory restore" partition, because nce you've upgraded Operating systems it's less than useless.

If you have a Dell that partition is easily deleted.

On some manufacturers setups (like an Acer I just stripped for parts)
it's somewhat harder to eliminate and requires something like "Parted Magic"
(NOT to be confused with "Partition Magic" a free downloadable program)
to get rid of it.

I have ubuntu 10.10 on this laptop im using (but due to installing win7 ultimate AFTER I put it on, need to restore the grub start up) and I actually liked it. My next laptop (comming tomorrow) will aslo have it put on it, gotta love dual booting. How do you instal your ubuntu on yours, with a CD or USB, I did the USB way.

i have it on cd, dvd, and usb. but i just used a cd copy
