I'd arther get hit in the face by a bag of air, than get hit in the face with a steering wheel...

if you are wearing your seatbelt correctley(and it working correctley) it should stop you before you reach the seat belt. and I would rather have just a seat belt. I like my face the way it is and my nose still somewhat straight. Once you see a lady that had a airbag deploy directly into her face, you'll never want that thing to deploy. But then again I believe that most of us are smart enough to not sit 2 inch from the airbag.
And I'm sorry to hear about your baby. glad to hear your doing ok.
