My 2000 B3000 3.0 2wd, will not shift into 1st gear. I was on some fairly steep dirt roads so I was downshifting to second gear. And as I would go slower 10-15 mph I would shift to 1st gear and the tranny never shifted down. I was confused about that.

There used to be a gizmo on side of those automatics would go bad and cause that but I can't recall it's name. Modulator Valve. At that time it cost under 10 bucks.

Use your brakes in an automatic. Pads & rotors are cheap and easy to replace, transmissions are not. Try replacing the transmission fluid (and filter if it has one),
