- I don't count birthday's anymore...just happy to be looking down at the ground instead of looking up
First franchised BK was in Miami, on NW 36 st, just east of Miami International Airport, 1954. Second one that I grew up near was in the north area of Dade County on US 441 and 191 st,,The first Burger King is 20 miles from me, in Mattoon Illinois.. It's a completely different type of place compared to all other BK's.
Remember riding bikes up there on Saturdays after me and friend had mowed a few yards, pulling mowers behind our bikes. 3 hp push mowers, and we charged $2.00 to mow entire yard, and split it.
Pigged out on an entire BK meal for less than a buck.
Had real paper routes back then. I delivered the Miami Herald in early morning before school, and the Miami News in the afternoons, both via my trusty Schwinn.
My grandfather opened the first KFC in Broward County, in 1958. Sat on the corner of US 441 and Hollywood Blvd. I grew up on KFC. Then, 3 piece meal, with real smashed taters/gravy, roll, cole slaw
was $1.29 Remember meeting the Col. many times. He would just stop in any restaurant he pleased, sample the food, and if it wasn't to his liking, would close you down right then n there. Couldn't open till he said you got it right.
And, there were no "heat lamps" Every order was basically made fresh.
