My '97 SAS...

Hope the ECTED works out for you...they aren't known for their durability. It is not a true locker as they advertise is and they are known to slip under load. I have also heard they are not rebuild able.

My body has an Ected in in his XJ D30. The Dana 30 ones are the problematic ones, mainly due to housing flex. They do completely lock, he has never had a problem with it slipping or disengaging. The only problem he has had is when the bearing for the supply wire had to much load on it, it pulled the wire almost all the way into the housing, luckily it didnt get tangled in the gears.

People rarely have problems with any other version than the D30.

Little bit of progress...got all the new calipers torn apart, painted and assembled:

I also took and cut down the rear dust shields. I did keep the centers a bit to protect the parking brake mechanisms. Started off by notching the shield...

After a trip past the bench grinder and air sander, they looked like this:

I also started on the gear setup on the rear diff...Tone ring mounted:

When I went to put the gears on, something looked wrong...the Ford 8.8 is only supposed to have 10 bolt holes on the ring gear...

Got new gears from a buddy. Long story....no one has/had 4.56 gears available for a couple weeks. I bought them from a buddy who will just replace them when he gets them in. I got the ring gear onto the ECTED, and ground the toe part of a couple of the teeth to allow the cross pin to come out:

Also got the bearings all pressed onto the carrier. With all that setup, I dropped the carrier into the housing and checked for where I needed to drill the hole for the control wires for the ECTED. I decided right above the bearing cap:

All new races installed for the pinion:

I needed a setup bearing for the inside pinion bearing...so I pulled the old one off and mounted it in the drill press with some 60 grit emery paper and let it run for a while. It took longer than expected, but it slides on and off the pinion fairly easily:

So after screwing around with it for a while, I was able to get the backlash to 0.011". I don't mind this as it's within spec of 0.008-0.015". Here are the patterns I was getting after the backlash was set:

Here is a shot of how the magnet is held in place inside the diff. It uses just a tab mounted under the right side bearing cap bolt:

Now...here's the kicker. While double checking stuff just before I was packing it up for the night, I started getting 0.013-0.015" of backlash. I'm not sure why this is, but I gaurantee that I won't allow it, not with how important this setup is. However I was getting tired, and decided it would be better if I got some sleep and came back to it tomorrow after I'm done at work. If you have any suggestions, I'm open to them.

Get a good pattern first by adjusting your pinion depth. Once you have a good pattern, play with the carrier shims to get the backlash in spec. Once its in spec, check the pattern again and adjust the pinion depth if necessary.

I've found that throwing around the backlash doesn't affect the gear mesh NEARLY as much as adjusting the pinion depth.

Make sure you have enough carrier preload. If the carrier isn't tight in the housing, that could make you get inconsistent BL values.

i was looking at your build on for wheel stampeders and i was thinking i have seen this before. any good calgary/southern alberta 4x4 clubs?

I've been taking a welding course from SAIT lately, and between that and work I've been so busy that I haven't been able to make it out to the garage to work on the axles. The good thing is though that my weld beads are getting way better.

However, I do have this weekend off so hopefully I can get the diffs setup, and finally start getting stuff on the truck ready to drop out the TTB...it may be a little while longer before I get it finished.

I'm really liking the Four Wheel Stampeders, but there are a few groups around. The Lethbridge Coulee Cruisers have been around for quite a while, not sure how much showing they have in the Okotoks/Southern Calgary area.
