Ok, i'm starting on my build with my 67 F-250 4x4. It has a closed knuckle dana 44 under it with drum brakes. I want to swap in a better axle, but don't know if I should go dana 60, or 44 for the front of it. I want to use this truck as a weekend driver/ playtoy/ hunt truck, and realistically don't want about about a 35" tire under it. Swapping in power steering will be later, but witht his axle swap I will also have to add power brakes. Now onto the rear, it is a dana 60, but from 67 I think it's coarse splins and weaker than newer ones. I want to upgrade it as well, but can I do it without having to swap entire axles?

i would get a dana 60 since your probably going to run a healthy v8

Nope good ole 300 6 banger, will eventually get a header and offy intake with a really small 4 bbl, but for now it's stock 1 bbl and intake and exhaust.

hmm, just read that disc brakes came on 3/4 and 1 tons in 68, while as 1/2 tons had to wait a while.... Is there any way to upgrade these axles, to as strong as current models, or should I just swap in a new front. I have found a few dana 60 king pins for about $350- 500

Much love for the old 300 - one of the most indestructible engines ever. We had a '69 F250 2WD that had a 360 V-8/C-6. Pretty tough old truck (survived this 16-year-old driver), but rotten gas mileage, maybe 11-12 mpg.

Mine is like a tractor with a roof. Crawls like a tractor, has arm strong steering like my old tractor, and the brakes feel about the same as my old tractor, but it goes faster haha....

I had an 81 f250 with that 300 in it. looked like hammered sht, had over 400k, but is still driven daily by my neighbor

Well, crap I didn't think axles were so dang much. The cheapest 44- 60 front I can find now is about $400, but that's for a 70's, they want about a grand for the 80- very early 90's king pin 60's...... looks like i'm stuck with my drums for a little while. Already have good gearing, came with 4.56's stock and a stock rear l/s

Is there any difference in strength, or anything between a late 70's 44 or 60 and a late 80's early 90's 44 or 60?

You don't need a 60 if you're just go piddle around in the woods. That 44 will be just fine. Swap in an open knuckle version if you want a much better axle.

Is there really any difference between a late70's model 44 and a 80's to early 90's one? Big differnce in price they want for them I need an 8 lug axle and I also think my wheel studs are 9/16" front and rear, but haven't had a chance to gander at 'em.

I got a 81 F350 Custom with the 300 inline 6 with the granny 1st gear w/dump body. That is a tough engine from my experience. We usually overload it to. :D

Ok, mine is the standard duty 3000 lb axle, not the 3500. It has the normal 1/2 lug studs, and is not the hd axle. I would like to go high pinion, with disc brakes, but don't know where to start to find out which ones are which. To top it off though, I went to get all the brake stuff today, no one in town has almost anything for it, plus no one can get new drums for the front....
