my 4x4 light is flashing

i have a 1997 for explorer with a 4.0 and when ever i turn on the key my 4x4 light flashes 6 times what is causeing this also when i put it in to 4high the light dos not come on indicating what im in plese help

more then likely you have a shift motor problem. take it to a shop that can scan the gem module for codes. if you have any shift motor codes just replace it.
