ok ive seen many posts on here by searching but i cant seem to find my problem if indeed it is a problem. to begin its a 99 3.0 4x4 auto. the tranny is screwed i beleive seeing as it takes 1-5 seconds to engage to drive.. it also will not rev freely to accelerate. if i shift it manualy 120 seems to be all its got and parked seems to chug around 2200 rpm. i have a 5 speed to swap as soon as i get the time but want to get it running right first. the things i already have done are. plugs and wires (NGK from crappy tire), k&n air filter, oil pressure sensor, seafoam in the engine through brake booster. the vacume pressure tested good.

now i want to check compression but cant get my tester through the hole in the manifolds? i might grind the end just a little to see if it will fit but dont want to ruin the tool.

the exhause seems louder than it should be? sorta like the muffler is hollow but no leaks in the exhaust.

i really like this little ranger and want to get it running properly any ideas to try would help as long as its not a 100 dollar part to try.

if it would help i might be able to get a video of it running on youtube.

thanks dylan :icon_confused:

how many miles on the truck?
whens the last time you changed your fuel filter?
could also be a vacuum leak, could be a ton of shit.
the shot trans could be contributing too, when my 2.3 trans when the whole thing ran like crap

You say the vacuum system tested good. http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/Summer2003/VacuumLeaks.htm

http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm <<click that link and do scenario 14.

http://www.fordf150.net/howto/diagnoseengine.php says

*idle speed reading slowly dropping toward zero indicates exhaust restriction.
excessive backpressure in exhaust then indicated by reading not increasing quickly to about 16 in Hg when engine speed slowly increased to 2000 rpm.

*backpressure also indicated by reading not dropping as quickly when throttle quickly released and remaining 5 inHg higher or more than normal.

*disconnect exhaust manifold from engine and retest. If problem disappears exhaust system is blocked.

*to locate restriction reconnect exhaust system one unit at a time testing after each until problem reappears.

thanks for the help unfortunatly its been raining lately and not suppose to stop for 3 days. but if i c a clear spot i will go out and run a vacume test for you and post a video on utube. havent changed the fuel filter. 315000 km so it is getting up there. were should i hook the vacume gauge to, mabe i didnt put it in a good spot. i was wondering also my 4x4 hubs are the vacume actuated ones. they didnt work so i made them live hubs by removing the clips.
