My 100hp motor killing my 7.5

My Ranger makes a clunking noise every time I let off the gas too, athough it is an 8.8". I think it's just normal play in the transmission and differential. U-joints are fine, it just has a lot of miles on it (166,000).

only time I broke my 7.5 with my 2.3 I was towing something in 2 low when the rope broke, broke a spider gear tooth off, pull the diff cover and look inside, do it with the rear axle on jack stands with the tires on and move the tires like suggested earlier, that will narrow things down

my 7.5 has around 200K on it, a lot of that with 31's on it, and the previous owner seemed to have wheeled it a fair amount as I got the drivetrain rolled... about 20K after I broke that spider gear, drove around for a month with all the metal shavings in there, to this day the rear pinion bearing cage is broken, I've been abusing it with the turbo 2.3 for the last ~10K miles. the shavings wore out the bearings enough to loosten the pinion and trash the pinion seal so it leaked oil for several months before I fixed it, and even then I did it the half assed way, still going strong...

How is your tranny mount? Is your spare tire mounted securely? I see stuff like this all the time. A customer will come in and say their (insert component here) is toast and upon further investigation, we find a loose component. Just my $.02.

Different thought here... Motor mounts? Trans mount? If the 2.3 mounts are toast, they can allow the motor to move a lot when you try to roll the truck in gear. And there can be a good clunk if you let of the gas quickly.

Motor mounts, tranny mount fine not the spare tire. Tranny makes some noise. When I push the truck on flat ground in gear with no e-brake on it will roll about 8 to 10" and clunk when I let go and it rolls back.

Clunk

There is another possibility. You may have excessive wear between the spider gears and side gears inside the differential case. In rare instances, the pinion shaft (what the spiders ride on) may also be worn out. The bottom line is, you have to open it up and see what's going on in there. If nothing else, it'll get you to change your fluid. By the way, when was the last time you changed the lube in your rear?

I have not changed the rear oil yet. No clue as I have had the truck for almost a year. But it is full when I looked at it last.
