How much work would it take to put a 79-93 mustang rear in a ranger? If it even can be done that is. Thanks

why do you want to?

I can get one for free if I want. Free is always good Right?:icon_confused:

free is good but free normaly means more work. you will need to cut off all of the stock brackets and weld on the leaf and shock bracket:icon_welder:. but first u need to check axle width.

That mustang rear will be 4 bolt wheel pattern also. It would be much better to spend a little cash and swap in an explorer 8.8. It's a much better axle and less work to swap.

You won't gain anything by doing this swap, the 79-93 4 & 6 cyl stangs had 7.5 rears, the V8's had 8.8's, but were only 28 spline. 92+ rangers with 4.0L has the same size axle, and is bolt in. By the time you invest removing all the brackets and welding on the spring perches and shock mounts and swapping the lug pattern, you will have more money into it than buying a ranger 8.8, possibly an exploder 8.8 from the junkyard. I understand free is free, I'd personally take the free axle and either part it out or try and sell it to a mustang enthusiast...

pretty sure mustang rear axles are narrower then a rangers also.

A lot of them came with the sweet 2.73:1 gears too! And you'll have a hard time finding one with 3.55:1 or greater.

not true, the 8.8s are about 3 inches wider than the ranger rear because the stang has equal length shafts. got i a mmustang rear in my 85 ranger and it wasnt all that much work. just cut the brackets off the 7.5 and weld on 8.8 as for changing from 4 to 5 bolt, thats easy too. take the longer 7.5 shaft and pick up another from the bone yard, they are about $50
