Good morning,

Has anyone put a single plug efi mustang 2.3l into a 87 2.3l 4x4? I know the engine will bolt into place (changing the accessory mounts and the like) but how about the difference in the head ports for the intake? I'm just worried that will be a serious difference in tourqe output that would really take away from the already lacking performance of the 2.3 in the Ranger.

The only reason I ask is that I can get an 88 stang 2.3l with 65000 to replace my ailing 275000 mile engine in my ranger for cheap.

Welcome to the site, with this as your first post.

I'm not a 2.3L guru, but perhaps someone else can chime in shortly.

I put a 2.3 from an '88 auto Mustang into my '86 4x4 Ranger because the PO decided to cook the engine. Honestly, there was no major difference in the ports on the engine I used. The only differences I encountered were the oil pump and pan were different (narrower, so change the dipstick too), the valve cover was a little different and all of the plugs for the sensors. I just switched the manifolds and the sensors on the block and went with it. I also put in a pilot bushing, and used my thermostat housing (I don't know if it is different because the car didn't have one on it). I noticed the throttle body was really similar, but the vacuum ports were angled different (maybe the reason the valve cover is shorter?).

I agree that the torque is lacking. But if you are worried about it, check around for a difference in cams (I was told they had the same part number, but have at it). Honestly, it might be worth ordering a bigger cam anyways while you have it apart.
