I erroneously started out in the intro section listing a problem I was having with my 2.9....Sorry Mods and the Powers that Be!

Not to rehash but I was having problem with my eng idling at startup. It revs up and down and sometimes just dies. It restarts fine, but still idles real rough. I noticed that the amp needle moves with the engine while it does this...but I don't think that would have anything to do with it. Or would it? I got out there messing with it and when I take the vacuum line off the silver thingy that has 2.9L imprinted on it...I don't know what that is...I'm a carburator guy....the line going to where the air filter is...it revs up a little bit and then settles down and acts like an engine should. When I put the line back on, it sputters and shutters and goes back to the way it was.

Now this is only on a cold start....after the motor is warmed up...it starts and runs fine.

Anyone else have this issue and corrected the problem?

ok finally had a chance to fiddle around under the hood some. Here's what I've found out. As you can see in the following pic, while the engine was idling I pulled this vacuum hose off and the engine revved up a bit then settled down and ran smooth...I turned off the engine and restarted fine. I then put it back on and it idles ruff. Any suggestions?

Also, I am totally new to the EFI engines and don't know anything...can someone tell me what these are?

And what is this plug? I removed the light bar from the bed and the wire from the light bar ran to this plug. But, I didn't think the light bar was factory installed. If it was, it wasn't a very good job.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but I think it is an O2 sensor for the air intake. I myself don't know much about older engines, and larger engines in general. Give me a small engine, and I'll fix it up all day long, but the bigger the engine, the more complicated it gets :/

Their should be a vacuum diagram under the hood usually on the radiator support up front. The diagram gives you the general location of the components. Someone here could probably help with the diagram if you don`t have a repair manual. I always buy a manual for my vehicles bone yards usually have a pile of them for cheap. Your Idle does sound vacuum related but pulling the codes and a good tune up including wires and PCV if you dont know how old they are. GL

Look for an air leak first

"KYRangerDude",

-The first photo is a vacuum line to your upper intake manifold (the silver part with "2.9L STAMPED INTO IT).
-Photo #2 is your trottle position sensor.
-Phont #3 looks like your EGR valve.
-I don't see images for the last 2 photos.

An air leak will cause this abnormality.

While it is NORMAL for the engine to idle up and down while warming up, stalling or dying is not. I have to guest that you may have a broken or leaking vacuum line. It is easy to check and cheap to replace a bad one (even all of them, if you purchase a few feet of tubing from Lowes or even the local auto-parts store).

I may be off on this as many things can cause an intermittent "stall". The vacuum is, like I suggested, easy and cheap. If you replaced them all, you may be into for $8-10, if it didn't fix it, call it PREVENTATIVE maintenance and part of your troubleshooting. Then move on to the next step.
