I have 2004 with a 3.0 and automatic transmission. The manual calls for Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant (yellow colored). Must you use this antifreeze or can you use the green antifreeze (Prestone). I think the block and heads are cast so I would think there is no problem.

gold coolant isnt "diesel" coolant. its been used in every ford car or truck for years now. diesel engines require yet another additive to be used in combination with the gold coolant.

you can change to green if you'd like, but you need to thoroughly flush the engines cooling systrem with fresh water to make sure you get ALL the gold out of there. green and gold donot mix well.

but gold coolant isnt that expensive, and its quality stuff. why do you want to switch?

I got some greenish extended life Prestone stuff at Wally World that is compatable with any other color. I flushed my F-150 (it was brown and needed it) and filled it up with this stuff and distilled water late last summer, no complaints so far.

yes there are the "universal" coolants out there, but ford still says there are compatability issues between those and their gold coolant. they may just be saying that to get you to use their coolant...but i wouldnt risk it. a thorough flush with fresh water will remove any leftover gold in the system.

The premium gold is an extended use antifreeze. It is good for 100k miles according to Ford and seems to be used in all Ford diesels as well as gasoline engines. The green (Ford) is good for 40k miles. They are both ethylene glycol based with the major difference being more additives. Whether they are compatible is still under debate according to the sources on the web I read. You can google Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant for more info. The truck already had the green in it and seems to have no problems.

Yep...universal Trans fluids too. Ford says type "MV" in the Fusion, and that's what it gets...Motorcraft. I don't care if Valvoline says their stuff is the same thing.

Go with the Motorcraft Gold coolant, after all, what's yer peace of mind worth?

IMO I'd be relucant to mix anti-freezes, just look at what happens when you mix green coolant with dexcool. :icon_twisted:

Pay the little bit extra $ for the Motorcraft. Then you can ignore it for 100k, rather than doing it twice in that amount of time.
