new here guys, just bought a 2001 ford ranger with the 3.0 and 100,000miles for $800. have plans on bagging it and everything, but first things first is the motor. when i bought it he told me it needed a timing chain. pulled the timing cover off and everything lined up. didnt jump time or anything. looked under the truck and the starter was off. since i work at a auto parts store i got the hook up on a good starter. put it on and it started turning over, just not cranking. then i remember the guy telling me that he did a tune up on it. plugs and wires, all the good things. checked the plug wires and he just had all the wires connected to the nearest plug, so it wasnt hard to spot the firing order was WAY off. re did the firing order on it and tried turning it over. its wanting to crank now. but when i pulled the plugs i could see the fuel and it had a super strong odor coming off them. burned all the fuel off the plugs and tried again, no go. would it be best just to buy new plugs? or is there something different. i know the fuel pump is kicking on because i can here it when i turn the ignition on. any help is greatly appreciated

Fuel's not the issue, and if anything you may be flooding it. The gap should be about 0.044," and you are not getting spark somewhere. Check your connections at the DIS and make sure your wires are fully connected to your plugs. You could have crappy plugs, but even if you do, it should still be able to fire if gapped right.

Seeing as how you're at an auto store, I'm sure you got the right starter and currently have a battery with enough cold cranking amps.

Have you tried to clean your MAF sensor, located by the air intake cleaner? It could be dirty enough to send an inaccurate reading...

i got the correct starter and the right battery. OE cca amps is 550 i have one with 600. today i went and bought more plugs for it, and its still a no go. ill try to clean the MAF sensor and see what happens. it has spark because i checked for it. could it be it actually did jump time, i just overlooked it?

Most likely not but the cam position sensor or syncronizer shaft could be bad. The CMP monitors spark and injector pulse and can cause problems.

PS: any engine codes??

i dont have a code reader at the house. my co worker said it could be the crankshaft position sensor to. im just really stumped on it. on wednesday when i get my day off, im trailering it to my dads shop to actually work on it. so before i head up to his shop im bringing it by my job to run the codes and everything.

and the codes were?..................................................

anybody please?

well i would guess the chain is fine and if you are getting a good spark and fuel it sounds like something is throwing your timing off........camshaft positioning sensor? crankshaft positioning sensor? pcm?

Yea Skittles, pull the codes first. It's Wednesday now...

. put it on and it started turning over, just not cranking.

FYI- "turning over" and "cranking" are the same thing........what you are probably trying to say is the truck cranks over, it just will not fire/start.

just got home. it was the crankshaft sensor that showed up. sorry about that modelageek, made a noob mistake.

so for future members......did the truck throw a code and if it did what was the code? did you replace the crankshaft positioning sensor yourself? was it difficult?

didnt remember the code when i posted last night. ill get it again today. didnt have time to replace the sensor or anything yet. first i have to find where the thing is located at. never messed with v6s or fords in my life
