well guys i'm looking for a few opinions. i got my new 08 4x4 4.0l on feb. 7th. i broke her in on regular pennzoil 5w-30. changed her at her first 1,000 miles then at 3,000 so i'm on track for every 3k. i got about 200 miles before i need to change the oil again. my question is i'm looking to go to full synthetic. i've always been a pennzoil guy i've used it in everything. my dads always used it and so have i. now i know mobile 1 is the absoloute best, but what do you think about pennzoil platinum? are they conparable? what would you guys run? i'm just unsure if i want to make the switch to mobile 1. and just because i'm going to synthetic i still will be changing it every 3k. thanks in advance for your opions

Jeremy

Oil is oil. It really doesn't matter.

As long as it's appropriately API rated.

And spec is 10W-30, not 5W-30, but that's only going to affect cold-engine behavior. You don't need 5W-30 until it starts getting ridiculously cold (subzero).

X2 on that one. Unless you are driving a Aston Martin Vanquish or something, you don't need some top-of-line oil. I just dump the generic stuff into my engine, and somehow it runs fine and hasn't caught fire and exploded yet.

I run Motorcraft synthetic blend oil and filters from Wal-Mart, but it is a matter of conveniance and price more than anything, the oil is about the same price as straight conventional.

My parents 2002 4.0 Explorer calls for 5W-30, in both the book and on the fill cap, use whatever your engine calls for which I think is still 5W-30. No point in risking a warrentee issue over having the wrong oil in it.

alright thanks guys for all your input. my cap says 5w-30 and so dose the manual so thats what i run. when she gets a few mor miles and out of warrenty i'll run 10w-30 in her.

Yup, 5w30 is what most 4.0L's call for

I used Mobil 1 with changes at 3-4K in both a Oldsmobile and a Camry. Maybe a coincidence but both vehicles developed far more oil leaks than should be expected.
For full synthetic I would consider other brands. You may also want to let it break in a bit longer before moving to synthetic.
So far I really like the Motorcraft synthetic blend. Great quality at a reasonable price.

well i think that i a m gonna go with pennzoil platinum. and i was thinking the same waiting another oil change maybe 2 befor making the move. i thought about running their synthetic blend for an oil change before going to full syntheic as well.

Ah yes, a 2008 is quite different from the 1992 in your signature.

I changed a total of four high mileage engines to Mobil 1 with no prep at all aside from a new filter.

No additional leaks developed.

I have always run the cheapest oil possible in my trucks. I change the oil religiously every 3K and have never had an oil related failure or any excess nasties in the engine if torn down for anything else. It just doesn't matter what you use as long it is appropriate for the engine in the first place and it gets changed often. The only time I use synthetic is in the dirt bike because it lubes both the transmission AND the engine on a little more than a quart. I would think that would stress the oil pretty badly! I have to admit I use the "expensive" stuff in the airplane because a 25K engine rebuild or a failure in flight is not an option.

If you change it every 5000 km, it really makes no difference what you run. Just run what the manufacturer specifies and you'll be fine. The only time I stray from this is with high rpm race engines (which are far different from the OE engines).
