How bad is it to have to much oil in your truck? Added oil today from a 5qt. container and overfilled by about 1/2-3/4 qt. Should I drain the excess, or can I let it naturally burn off (truck burns a little oil). What kind of damage am I looking at.

Also, what is actually going on with to much oil. Is the crankshaft actually sitting in motor oil. I guess that would be an extreme case.

too much oil generates more pressure
it can blow an engine seal, and/or damage the oil pump
no matter if it burns, my advice is to drain the excess

Unless it's hitting the crank, it'll be fine (which I doubt, a full quart.. maybe). Once it starts hitting the crank it'll foam, then it starts building pressure and popping seals. Otherwise the top of the fluid just sits a little higher than normal.

the oil pump just pumps, pulls the oil from the bottom of the pan, the only way the pressure would be higher would be if the end of the oil flow path was plugged or if a high pressure or flow oil pump was installed. The only thing that can happen if the oil is overfilled would be for the crankshaft to hit the oil and froth it up, but that would take like 2 quarts overfilled.

1/2 qt will never hurt it. don't even worry about it

That's good. One less thing to worry about. I'm check the stick again, if it looks to high, it won't hurt to drain some.

If you are too worried about it. You can pull the oil filter and let it drain some oil out. Really depends on the size of filter thou.
