Is there any way to get more TORQUE out of the 2.9?:headbang:,I can give a rats ass about the horsepower, just wondering.

More gear gives more torque to the wheels.

Other than that you can move more air through the engine,
per-cycle (Turbo, Blower or Nitrous)

"power mods" tend to increase the ammount of airflow over time
this increases power by allowing the engine to make the same
torque at a higher rpm.

Basically if gears won't do it for you then a bigger engine is required.

Frankly I think the 4.0 is everything the 2.9 shoulda been but never was
and never will be.

Thanks,I was just wonderin'.My truck has 3.73's in it,which is good 'cause I do alot of highway travel, but it hurts uphill power, which is what I need for getting up hwy 18 from barstow to big bear:headbang:.Is there any way to regear the 5 spd?

Down shift. If you're trying to solve an issue with torque at highway speeds, just shift. Lower gears are great for letting you keep it in a specific RPM range or getting it moving in first gear, but by the time you're on the highway you can accomplish the same thing just by dropping to fourth (or third, if you really need it).

trust me I do that,I know how to drive a stick.how would 4.10's effect highway performance and economy?

If you understand that, then what is it that you're trying to accomplish? You're stated problem was climbing hills on the highway. Gears don't really change that beyond what's already in your control by shifting differently.

the hill I have to climb goes from 3,000 ft to 7,000 ft in 30 mins,it's a steep hill.I just would like to have a bit more hill climbin' power, that's all.on the highway she hauls ass.:icon_thumby:

Then we're back to the same question. Gears will help you get the truck rolling in first gear. Past that, just put it in the right gear selection. They won't make any real difference in your situation.

I'm not looking for 200 horses,it ain't gonna happen with the 2.9,just a wee bit more hill climbin' torque, that's all.I know you all get tired of hearin' these questions, but we gotta be able to get just a bit more power out the v6 without the need of a turbo or any other power adder.A 4.0 would be nice though.I might be gettin' a bronco 2 for about 100 bucks or free, some guy just wants it out of his yard.I:icon_thumby:f I do then I might be able to get a 4.0,just gotta wait, like they say,no substitute for cubic inches!

If shifting down doesn't give you enough power to climb, then your options are pretty straight forward. Cam and headers put together would make a difference, but they're not cheap and you have to pray that the MAP based fuel injection can handle it. Regearing two axles (assuming you're not doing it yourself) will probably run you $1000+ including parts and labor. You could swap in a 4.0 for that kind of money. For not that much more you could even buy a different truck.

IIRC, you're looking at 170ft-lb's vs 220 and the 220 actually comes on sooner. In equivalent trucks, it's very significant (despite what RustyOlRanger may come in here and say - he's never let facts and numbers get in the way of his opinion). Horsepower isn't that much different - 140 vs 160, so your peak power is about the same but you can get to it without downshifting.

sweet, now would a 3.0 be worth it,I'm just looking at options. If I can get another truck then I should be able to figure out what I want to do.:icon_thumby:
