Im getting a new ranger tommorw or sunday and have never had a V4, i looked at the tech page but its to confusing. What are some thing i can do for new horsepower or free up some? I saw headers (if you guys could can you please tell me some that are leagal for street use) but was woudering about my intakes? Are there High performance intakes out there for a 2.3L? NOT a COLD AIR INTKAE i mean some real performance!:headbang:

the tube intakes with a cone filter pull in hot engine bay air and hurt performance. Keep the stock air box. and putting exhaust on a 2.3 will sound like a honda ricer. trust me, did it once, for about a week and then put original parts back on

drop a larger engine in..... maybe a 2.9 v6

Someone should break the news to the OP that he has a durable reliable and dependable engine that is not setup for what he wants to do

I just went through this with my 2.3 truck. It had no balls. I have $0 invested in my set-up and it certainly made it a helluva lot more drivable.

Pretty much, its got a big blockage in the air intake tube to keep it from whistling at speed. The throttle cable loses its tension over time and your truck can never hit more than 3/4 throttle or actually kickdown into passing gear. Cat converters clog up and fall apart and clog the exhaust, and the original muffler.

K&N Filters and Cold Air Intakes (actually hot air) are all wastes of money on these motors.

There is nothing wrong with trying to make your truck have a little more motivation, but it gets to a point where your just throwing your money away.

my 2.5 compared to the 2.3(93) we had is a bull.
so knowing it has more power im happy with it.
a 4 cyl engine with 30" tires that still goes over 90mph is enough for me.
and it can do standing burnouts too.

I like 4-cylinders, unless I'm on the interstate I never drive over 70. They pull whatever I throw at them. I can get 20-25 mpg average out of my truck. Theres more room under the hood to work on the thing, and less weight over the front wheels so it drives and handles better.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with trying to get more motivation out of yours. Anything you can do for free or cheap is worth the time and effort.

A friend of mine has access to a chassis dyno, and was messing around with his '91 2.8 V6 S-10. All stock, it pulled 85 horsepower to the wheels. He flipped the air-cleaner lid as a joke and ran it again to see 94 horsepower to the wheels. He's a older VW mechanic, and he showed me the dyno-sheet, so I completly believe him. Even little things matter when you don't have much horsepower to begin with.

the intake silencer mod is a good start to give it a bit more go
