Well I'm away at school but my dad told me that his desktop monitor (probably at least 5 years old now, can't really remember exactly) is flickering. he didn't really say how frequently, but it must be frequent enough to be annoying enough to tell me. he said it is randomly, not just when he turns it on/etc.

time for a new one? he isn't opposed to getting a new one. he is no computer wiz or anything, so just a basic decent monitor will be good. he doesn't sit very far away from it, so that isn't a huge issue, but he will need it big enough to see clearly (i know this can also be adjusted with the resolution). i'm looking for at least a 17"... that's pretty much about standard now on desktops i suppose.

like i said, nothing fancy, seeing what deals you guys can find. doesn't need to be HD or anything like that.

Bigger monitors are getting cheaper. in return for a long range rescue tow a friend
put up half the price of a new computer monitor...

I got an ACER VE248Q 2ms LED-Backlight monitor for $204

24" and 1920x1080 Full HD resolution.

For Mother's day I got my Mother a 20" Dell 2011E,
just don't tell her it only cost $99 shipped

BTW, I settled on the ACER because it was the only mfg that offered a 3-year warranty

is it CRT or LCD? LCD monitors that flicker usually have a backlight thats about to go out, can be replaced fairly easly with some skill. Flickering CRT means your flyback transformer is failing or something else wich means if your not a complete electronics whiz, your screwed, but you can get used CRT monitors for under 10$ on craiglist :)

personally i prefere CRTs, but to each to his own.

A loose connection, short in the cable, or even a bad video card could also cause the monitor to flicker. I'd start easy, and move your way up.

hm well i will look around for LCD's online and just hope it's not a video card.

thanks guys

Yeah, NewEgg or Amazon are both about as convenient and inexpensive as it gets. If you've got a Prime account you can filter the results to only products eligible for it, and have it overnight for $3.99 shipping.
