CNN0 -- Capt. Phil Harris of the Discovery Channel show "The Deadliest Catch" died Tuesday of complications from a stroke suffered late last month. He was 53.

Harris, the tattooed and gruff captain of the Cornelia Marie, was a fan favorite in the reality show about crab fishing off Alaska.

"Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him," a statement from the network said. "We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart."

Harris suffered a massive stroke on January 29 while his crew offloaded crab at St. Paul Island, Alaska.

"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad -- Captain Phil Harris," said a statement from his sons, Jake and Josh Harris. "Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end

For anyone who watches Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel, Capt. Phil Harris passed away :atear:

Deadliest Catch is by far my favorite show on T.V. I have alot of respect for those guys and the hell they have to go through to earn a buck. I think we all need a moment of silence for a good man

Another smoker added to the list. Glad I quit 5 years ago. You never saw him on the show without a cancer stick hanging out of his mouth. He sure was a cool some-gun! Show won't be the same without him. RIP!

He was always my favorite on the show.

That's bad but he smoked like a freight train! We all have choices in life and most times our life if a product of those choices. So try to make the right ones and have sense enough to know when you didn't and try and change them before it's too late.

That sucks, I guess I kinda saw it coming though after the one clot broke loose and went into his lung.

I wish his family and crew well.

I haven't watched that show for a while because of my schedule, but I used to watch it all the time, and he was my favorite. Right up there with the biker-lookin' Hillstrand brother and Blake on the Maverick.

It is too bad, but like the others said he always had at least one cigarette burning, and supposedly chugged energy drinks too.

It doesn't look like the apples rolled too far from the tree either, both his kids are almost always smoking on the show too.

I love the show and he was one of my favorite captains, he will be missed.

It wasn't ONLY the cigarettes or the fact that most times he didn't need
to use a lighter (he'd use the last cig to light the next one) but as his son
commented on the show, the man sucked down a CASE of Red Bull every day.

It was gonna happen...

He returned aboard to do his job, one of the most stressful jobs there is
against medical advice.

I think it's likely he died doing what he loved, and during an offload
is one of the happy times for a fishing boat captain.

Offloading is what it's all about.

Yeah, he def seemed to prefer fishing to taking care of himself.

That was probably never more evident than the time he got thrown against the wall and when he thought he had a collapsed lung what did he do?

Instead of setting course for port and getting into a hospital he lit up, chugged down a Red Bull, and spent 3 more days at sea pulling pots.

Still, he did die doing what he loved, an what more can any of us ask for?

I kinda wonder who is gonna replace him as skipper.

i bet the engineer will replace him, until one of the sons takes his spot. Man this sucks, just reading it for the first time. This is the first year that I was actually thinking of all the guys out there, hittin the opeilios hard in the worst weater possible. New season should start in april or may, im interested how they give everyone the news. RIP Phil
