Anyone here using the Moates.net stuff? I've been checking it out and I'm not sure what I would need to run it in my 94 2.3T Ranger. I have the LA3 and a large VAM is on the way if I want it but using the stock EEC IV with a piggy back seems alot cleaner to me. Any suggestions here on what works really reliably and still gives good performance?

I use it. It wont work with your stock ECU because nobody has made a .def file for it. The .def file is sorta the framework in which you can change your .bin file, which is the actual file that your ECU uses.

The LA3 with the chip and a MAF sensor seems to be a pretty good setup, but if you arent looking to tune so much as just change some parameters, you can stick with the VAM. If you go MAF you will definitely need to use a WBO2 and tune the MAF transfer function in the ECU.

What MAF are you using? I've read that a Lightning MAF will work well with a setup like "ours". Just to get this straight; the LA3 and Ranger harness (repinned of course) can use the J3 piggyback. Does that piggyback come with a basic tune in it or do I need to .def and .bin files right off the bat?

Yup, the .def file contains the source code, which is compiled into the binary that the ECU reads.

I am using an HPX insert style MAF (aftermarket for 05+ mustangs) in a blow thru config. It was a bit pricy and iIm sure the lightning MAF would have been just as good for my setup, but I get OCD about certain things. Go with the Lightning MAF if you can get it for a decent price.

Yes.

No, it's empty and can be used for any EEC-IV computer, provided there is a corresponding .def file. you can pull stock .bin files straight off the computer if you have the hardware. LA3 .def and .bin files are pretty easy to come by. You need a special def if you want to use a MAF, but I have it, it's on the 2.3 tweecer yahoo group and I believe moates has one as well.
