Mitsubishi to mazda swap

I have a 90 w/2.9 2wd ranger with the extinct Mitsubishi FM132 5 speed trans.
The trans. guy won't even touch it for lack of parts.

I would like to swap it to a mazda.
Could anyone tell me what I'm in for?

I need to know what all I'll need, all I have is the Mazda built M5OD-R1 trans. no flywheel, clutch, switches, etc...

As long as the M5od came off a v-6 it should be pretty easy. Shifter might be in a different place and I'm not sure 100% about drivelines...

You can keep using the flywheel/clutch from the 2.9, but if the tranny's out, you might as well upgrade to a flywheel/clutch from a 4.0 for some added strength andl life, it'll bolt right on, but you'll also need a 4.0 starter.

The m5od MUST come from a 2.9 or a 4.0. A 3.0 will not work.......

Needed a new yoke for the drive shaft, different shifter, cut the floor, drop the y-pipe (broke a manifold), torch the rotten cross member and removing the line for the slave cylinder is a stinking whore ($5.00 tool = easy, no tool = impossible).


But other than that it's all ice cream and roses.

The FM132 uses the smaller diameter slip yoke that is common to the 2wd A4LD, C4, C5, and TK transmission.

The Mazda M5OD-R1 uses the larger diameter sline that was also used on the AOD transmission.

Switching from an FM132 to an M5OD-R1 will require a 2wd floor plate (the size of a "coffee table book") and removing a 2.5" wide strip of carpet from the position of the shifter hole.

Generally I recommend using aerosol rubber cement and gluing that piece of carpet to the floor plate behind the shifter to fill the gap that results from the relocation of the shifter.
