on the north end of vancouver island,a few hundred kms south of me a sport fishing boat from a lodge in winters harbour went missing a few days ago-with the local guide and three clients from the u.s.-they didn't say where they were from in the u.s.the boat was found capsised yesterday,no sign of the occupants;all 4 lifejackets were still with the boat.this being a sport fishing town too,it's hitting pretty hard here.there are people hoping against hope that they made it to shore, but it dosen't look too good.have to hope for the best, though.

It is always so sad to hear this kind of news. But I want to know why nobody was wearing a life vest?? All it takes is a 4-6 foot wave to knock over people and a fishing boat and if you are not ready for it it could be deadly.

in most case life jackets are just stuffed into the front of the boat....floater suits are usually worn, although they are not as effective as lifejackets.the pacific ocean can get pretty hairy, theres been some big swells the last month or so.

Noone evers wears their lifevest unless a particular need arises such as a storm. And when youve been doing something like sport fishing as long as that island has you get complacent. You forget about things like sudden storms or rogue waves on calm days. Or hell, even hookin a whale of a fish that could capsize a boat. The endless possibilities get forgotten when complacency sets in, Not much different than a warzone.

this is as true a statement as could be made.no one thinks about the close calls, until it gets too close.

No one rides in my boat without a vest.

Every few months here (in Indiana no less!) there is a story about some guy who's been fishing for years, and they find his boat without him in it.

I've been in too many close calls, not to respect the water, no matter how deep.
