Good Afternoon All!

So my 2000 Ford Ranger is having some problems - 6cyl 4.0 Liter... The check engine light came on and I took it to auto zone - Cylinder 4 and 6 misfires.. I changed the plugs, wires, and coil pack on all 6 cylinders. I disconnected the red wire from my battery to reset it. The engline light came back on not much later with a cylinder 1 misfire!! Also have a bank 1 and bank 2 lean.. Any other suggestions?? My fuel pressure is running at 72, i recently changed an 02 senser (one located underneath the truck before the muffler on the tail pipe).. I am trying to avoid taking it to the Ford dealership, but I'm spending a lot of my money and not fixing the issue.

Also, when it's cold out my truck makes a loud sucking air noise.. I mean loud, people driving by look at me weird. It only happens when it's cold out.. I love my 4.0 Liter 6ycl Ranger, but It's starting to give me headaches..

I'm not really qualified to give tech advice on misfiring, but doesn't a sucking air noise mean you have a vacuum leak somewhere?

Welcome to The Ranger Station!

The 4.0 is prone to bad upper and lower intake manifold gasket leaks, causing it to run lean. That may or may not be a factor with your misfire, but I'd bet that sucking sound is the root of your entire problem.

I had a 99 Explorer (SOHC, not your OHV) for a while. When I got it, it had a sucking sound too. It was so bad that I could put my body weight (pressing down with my hands) down on the plastic intake manifold and make the sucking sound change intensity. It was very evident where the gasket had leaked, once I removed the lower manifold.

what he said ^

most likely your intake gasket is allowing air through, leaning out the truck. as for the missfire, im not too sure on that one. could have damaged a plug putting them in.

That may just fix my air sucking problem. Initially I thought it was the stock air intake system because the sound seemd to be coming from there. I replaced it with a new cold air intake system last spring, and it went away because warmer days were upon us. Now that it's cold again the sucking noise is back and it sounds like it's coming from my cold air intake... I'lll check the gasket - Under the throttle body correct???

As for the misfire, I don't know what's going on . I double checked the plugs and they were fine.. It's slowly getting worse.. I scheduled Ford to run tests on my truck on Monday.. I'll update you with the exact problem, if they can even figure it out.

the CAI can cause an issue with the MAF.....do you have the oiled filter? if I was you I would put the original air intake back on to try and DX this.............a dirty MAF can cause the lean codes........I am not positive about this but I think the gasket they are talking about is the intake gasket. the one that goes between the intake and the block. you might as well get a new TB gasket too

Sooooo I dropped it off at Ford last night and called today around 4. They haven't pinpointed either problem so they need more time... I find that hard to believe considering they are "experts" and are working on a Ford Ranger..
