My credo
If I learned from my mistakes, I'd be a genius !!
I have several pull it yards around the Orlando area and I’m looking to do the mirror with outside air temp for my 99 Stranger B2000. Does anyone know what vehicles I should scout for? Plenty of Explorers, Sport-Tracs, Expeditions from mid 90’s to mid 2000’s in these yards. Not really interested in the overhead console swap out of an Expo but since I’m going there, I guess I’ll have a look at one and see if it’s another mod I may consider. But for now, a mirror with the small temp display is what I’m after. I know I need to grab the temp sensor from the grille and as much of the pigtails as possible. I’ll figure out the wiring later using write ups I’ve come across but I’m pretty good with electrical if I grab something from a different make like a Chevy p/u truck etc and have to bench test the wires.

they come in all kinds of cars and can be swapped easily. if you had posted this earlier, i could have mailed you one with temp and compass because i recently cleaned my garage and threw some out the kids and i collected while messing around to put into my old sonoma.

look for one with the least amount of wires and google has some great write ups for installing into vehicles that didn't come with temp/compass mirrors

I think almost any Expo/Mounty set up will work in our trucks. I have a 2001 Ranger and grabbed the Mirror with compass and temp from an Older Explorer. Using the Tech section for wiring, It was easy peasy.

So the mirror you got had both temp and compass or did you do it along with the overhead console. From what I saw, the ones with compass have the unit attached under the mirror. Don’t really need the compass feature per se since I have navigation on my double din Pioneer.

I did the overhead console and mirror combo. The truck is incapacitated and hasn't ran since I did the mod. I think the Compass is in the mirror and the rest of the info in in the console. I think @85_Ranger4x4 used a Chevy Tahoe Mirror w/compass in his truck. I could be wrong but somebody here used a GM Mirror in their Ranger.

There's an article in the tech section that outlines the project and suggests a few donor vehicles if I recall correctly. Don't remember what mine came from. But I used that article as a reference.

Thanks guys and I had read that same mod thread. I’m now beating my head against a wall in shame because he stated it was from a 97 Tahoe and I missed that. Now I know what to keep an eye out for at the JY since that’s exactly what I’m looking for….temp up in the top right corner.

There are really a lot of different vehicles out there with the same mirrors. Only one or two companies make the mirrors. If you hat one with all the features, You can easily remove the wires from the connector for the things you don't use. I'm only using compass and auto-dimming on mine. But they sometimes even have the output to control side mirrors.

Ford was good about putting that stuff on dashes or OHC's.

I looked and looked in Ford sections and I only ever found one... and the only one I found in a grand marque didn't fit the base on my windshield.

GM section is where it is at.

Well, talk about my lucky day. Went to the JY today and after rummaging through several Chevy vehicles, I kept finding mirrors with temp but also the Onstar buttons. Then I found an Altima with the Homelink buttons but only the compass feature which isn’t what I was after. But the Homelink was something I hadn’t thought about because my Genie opener if clipped to my visor. So I started googling part numbers as I came across various Gentex mirrors in different vehicles. Found a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder and it had a GNTX453…my Google-Fu was strong and learned it had Auto-Dim, Homelink, compass and temperature. Boomshakala….Score !!! I grab the mirror and the harness all the way down the A pillar. Next was the ambient sensor on the radiator support and a bunch of that harness. They only charge $15 for powered mirrors and I figured they would probably ask me for another couple of bucks for the sensor. I pack up my tools, and this is where it gets even better. I walk up to the checkout and the kid slides the window open, I lay the mirror and harnesses on the table and he say…”Meh…you’re good “. I said seriously? He waves me on. Woohoo…I love scoring free shit. Brought everything home and installed it in about an hour, programmed the Homelink and took my truck to the cul-de-sac up the street to drive around in circles to calibrate the compass. Everything works perfect. One happy camper 😊
