Happy Friday. We received out 2022 Ford Ranger XLT/FX4 on 9.23.2022. We have 850 miles on it now. Doing a round trip drive from Arizona to Montana and back later this month. Any input on what you've found to be the best mileage for the trucks first oil change? Thank you. Doug

What does the Owner's Manual recommend for the first oil change?

I personally would do it BEFORE the long road trip. I've heard after the first 1,00 miles an oil change is needed to remove all of the debris from new parts rubbing together. I've also heard 3,000 miles. When I bought a brand new SUV, the owner's manual said to wait for the on board computer to give an indicator to when the oil is to be changed. IIRC it came on around the 3k mark.

We went 5k on our 2.3 Bronco, at like 12k it seems fine.

when the new motor was put in my full size, the dealer ship said bring it back in 500 miles for its first change. i think our three ford escapes had to be brought in at 5k miles for their first changes but if you are going out of town, do it before you take off

I did my first at 1500 just because I heard rumors of fuel dilution in the turbo motors. Then every 5k afterwards. Only at 27k right now though. Oh by the way was fine on dilution issue. Checked first 3 oil changes with minimal fuel in oil.

My system is first oil change at 2500 miles, then at 5000 and every 5000 after. Agree with Ranger850 above, if you’re going on a long trip I would change the oil before you leave. Then the next oil change at 5000.

Thank you ALL very much. Owners manual offers varying fluid changing cycles based on the type of driving one does and environment one lives in.
Historically, I've done first oil change at about 100 miles or so. Given the long trip, I'll change the oil prior to making the trip. As the truck is new the Dealer offered the first oil change for free so we'll take advantage of that.
Following that, I've done oil changes at the 5000 mile mark, especially living in Phoenix and the "warm" summers we have. Thank you all. Doug

Personally, I would do it right before you take that trip.

Opinions on this are going to vary greatly. I would definitely not wait until the truck tells you to change it or follow the recommended 10,000 miles or one year change interval. So, change it before your trip. My personal opinion is to change the oil every 6 months unless you do a lot of driving over a given year. Then, I would think about 5,000 - 7,500 mile oil changes, depending on the type of oil you use. Synthetic, longer. Conventional motor oil, shorter. Blend, somewhere in the middle.

@Dwgray ,
On a new engine I do the following:
• 200 mi, oil change with patroleum based
• 500 mi, oil change with patroleum based
• 1,000 mi, oil change to synthetic
After these first 3 oil changes I revert to my normal intervals.

3000 miles is plenty early enough, 5000 miles or 6 months-whichever comes first wouldn't bother me. 10,000 miles or once a year is absolutely nuts- keep in mind that the powertrain warranty runs out at 50,000 miles and Ford is no longer responsible. Most people would like their engine to outlive the payments.

Engines today are built better than they were "back in the day" or even 10 years ago. You can never change the oil enough. If you think about it... drag racers change the oil after every tear down, which generally is every run which is a 1/4 mile.

You can't be wrong following the owner's manual and you can't be wrong changing it every 200 miles. But you can be wrong not changing it ever.

It's absolutely true that engines are better and oil is better. The humid air that makes it hard to breathe in the summer and the sub zero air in the winter is drawn into the engine by the PCV system and moisture condenses into the oil. If a vehicle is driven enough to be fully warm for a few miles EVERY TIME IT'S STARTED, the moisture will vaporize and get sucked into the intake through the PCV. If the vehicle gets driven a bunch of short trips, the moisture continues to build and a cold engine pushes more combustion byproducts past the rings into the oil. I would rather buy a 5 year old vehicle with 100,000 miles than one with 10,000 miles, lack of exercise is fatal for vehicles, too.

Eh, I would rather do a rebuild than rockers and floor pans.

Bring on the low mile cream puffs!

I have a 2020 Ranger, I have changed it at 5k exactly with 5w-30 motorcraft synthetic blend and motorcraft filter. I am about to change it tonight for the 60k interval. No complaints so far.
