Replacing the heater core along with the hoses this week. They replacement hoses did not come with any protect mesh sleeve like the factory ones did.

Unfortunately the original sleeves are in such bad condition that I don't want to re-use them. I wonder if I can source this mesh sleeve somewhere else? Not sure if it is for protection from heat or just physical protection from other sharp elements under the hood.

It would be great if the new hoses lasted as long as the OE ones did.

If it is the corrugated plastic sleeve, you can probably get it in the plumbing section or similar in Lowe's, Home Depot or Mendards. cut to length and there you go.

It's just to keep them from rubbing on things. I wouldn't worry about having them on there, as long as your hoses aren't touching anything.

Re: the heater core replacement. I was under the impression I had to remove the whole blower box from under the dash to get to the heater core on my 92

However I saw a YT video where someone with a 87/88 removed just the blower box bottom plate and had full access to the heater core which came out easily once the hoses were disconnected on the firewall side.

Is the 92 just as simple or not?

the heater core on a Gen1 or Gen2 ranger is the easiest heater core to change.

Yes just that simple. Hardest part is pulling the old hoses off and getting the new ones back on. (The hose clamps are kinda hard to reach.)
