I have a 1993 Ranger XLT 3.0 with Mazda 5 speed tranny. It has 196,000 miles on it and is now semi retired. It's time to change the trans fluid again (I do it every 15k) and was wondering what is new about Mercon V, if anything? I don't remember what Mercon I put in last time. I was almost thinking of using Valvoline Maxlife if it comes in Mercon as I use that (Dex/Merc) in my 1997 Thunderbird.

I use max life. No problems

A buddy of mine had issues with his '93 and Mercon V in the past (not long after Ford started this crap over licensing the fluids) and I got a trans of my own that I'm not sure wasn't affected by Merc V at some point also... (slow to shift/chunks into gear sometimes)

A '93 calls for Mercon (what is "Dex/Merc" now), I would simply stick with what it was designed for and not take any chances.
