I want to find a mechanic that will let me work with him/her. Now I really don't know too much about actually wrenching, but I love to be involved, watch and learn. I don't have space at my house to take weeks with my truck in pieces as I slowly try to do the work soooo...gotta take it somewhere.

Where would you all go to find something like that? Am I crazy? :shok:

It is fairly common. I train a new kid every 3 or 4 years. I learned the same way (then I went to college). You just need to find someone willing to take you on.
My recent "student" just finished up a 5.0 Ranger swap which included welding. I helped very little, mostly just an extra hand.

Cept I'm not rally a kid, and I don't want to do this kind of thing for a living :)

I just want to pay someone to fix or upgrade a few things on the ranger and I want to be there to watch and help a lil.

I don't know if many shops are allowed to let the customer stand back there in the repair area. There is usually some sort of sign posted stating the customer must remain the lobby for safety reasons. It is more about insurance and liability. Now if you are getting paid and or are on an internship and allowed back there that's another story.

For what you want, you will have to find a small ma and pa shop who works under the regulations and is willing to let you help/watch.

My friend Mike isn't a kid either, he is 29. Which is just over half my age so, I call him a kid.
He has a job, he makes more a week than I do. His job has NOTHING to do with auto. He just has a love for cars.
He helps me with my projects and in turn I teach him what he doesn't know.
This is at my home, He is not allowed in the garage at work.

Now that sounds like what I'm looking for :)

A shade tree mechanic that wants an apprentice :)

I met an old timer up here that has his own little shop, nothing more than a couple of lifts and a few air tools. I can do most of the work on my truck, but I certainly do not know everything. I was in asking if he could do a quick job for me that required a lift, I could have done it myself I just did not want to mess with it on jackstands and what not. He knew I could do it, so he told me to come by after hours and he would help me out, he let me in the shop, lifted the truck up and said have fun.

Anytime I need a lift now or I want to work in a heated garage, I gove him a call and usually a case of beer or a couple of bucks. So long as the truck is out by the time he opens in the morning he doesnt formally charge me anything. And if I ever need a hand all I have to do is ask.
