mechanical speed cable

i was wondering is there any way i can keep my original gauge cluster out of my 95 ranger and buy a adapter computer thingy that goes from mechanical cable to electric speedo?

What are you swapping the cluster into? Something older than 95 I'm guessing, if it has a mechanical speedo. In theory the 95's just used the VSS signal which would be the same on a Gen 2/Early Gen 3 truck, so you could try tapping into that. However, 98 the signal changed and I don't know that it'd work.

I swapped in an Explorer Message Center into my 93. Stock it used the electronic speedo signal. I first tried the 98+ style center, didn't work (until you hit 30 or so, then the signal got to levels replicating the signal it was expecting I guess), but the 97 I put in works perfectly, so I would wager that you could make it work.

well i have a dana 20 transfercase im using in my 302 swap... now that i think about it the 94 and older rangers had mechanical speedos and they have the same guage clusters as my 95 with electric speedo... i suppose i could swap those out right?

A 94 and 95 have different clusters entirely. 95 is when they did the interior upgrade to what they have now. 94 was the Gen 2 style.

But if you're plugging in a mechanical speedo sensor into the Tranny/Transfer Case, there *has* to be a 2 wire VSS running out of it (otherwise, you'll have engine problems when decelerating). With that signal, your electronic speedo *should* continue to work because in theory it's the same signal.

so ur basically saying take the speed sensor out of my 1354 t-case and put it in the dana 20?

Well, you have to do something. Your engine will stall while decelerating otherwise. You have to provide the engine with a VSS signal somehow.
