Mech. fuel pump to electric. ?

I was thinkin about what it would take to switch from a mechanical pump to an electric one, if it would even work? The mech. one is goin bad and I already have the tank dropped for a sending unit change. IM in the middle of re-wiring so I could easily add wires for power and such. Though it seems that there would be no way to govern the amount of fuel being pumped...any thoughts?
 
What kind of electric fuel pump were you planning to use? If i remember correctly Auto Zone should sell some sort of fuel pressure regulator. The low pressure in tank pump from an 86-88 would probably be ideal but ive read that it they wont fit into the 84-85 tank.
 
Bronco_Chuck is correct - the sending unit/fuel pump assembly from the later FI models will not fit the older tanks. If your tank is cruddy and rusty, this could be an opportunity.
 
What kind of fuel cell set up would be nice? Or would the entire 86-88 tank set up fit in the stock location? It seems somewhat logical since the tank is already out and it would give me a bit more clearance puttin the tank behind the back seat..are there any legal issues with that...wantin this truck to stay street legal.
@Bronco-chuck: I have no idea, I did the duraspark swap with the motorcraft 2050 carb, and the cam. What kind of fuel psi./ fuel flow should I be looking for? I would assume that would dictate what kind of pump I should get? Thanx for the replies

I put a $40 inline pump on my frame rail, feeds my 302 quite nicely. Don't have to drop the tank to change it either.

i think your looking for somewhere around 5-7psi. the 86 and up tanks are identical except the hole diameter for the in tank pump and sending unit.
i personally would put it back in the stock location, just because you wouldn't have to mod up any hold downs or a new filler neck. Or you could just get an inline pump from pretty much any auto parts store.
 
Me personally I just put the stock mechanical pump back in the old one lasted 25 yrs. You pretty much have to move the power steering pum to get to it kinna a biotch but your probably leaking oil there anyway. Use the new pump and gasket to plug the leak.
 
You can use a street pump (holley red, etc) with 5-7 psi and u won't need a regulator. Run the pump inline and use the mech pump as a guide to make a block off plate. Don't forget a new gasket. I"d wire it fused to key on only power with a manual overide toggle switch for safety
 
i'm with the inline guys... though i wouldn't bother with the toggle shut off switch... you might want to consider using an inertia switch, to cut the fuel supply, in case of a roll over...
