It's about time to purchase new tires for my '91 Navajo. I do a lot of trail exploring and driving places I really shouldn't take a truck on regular old michelins. I'm looking into new tires, something to run until I lift my Navajo. It's mechanically very sound and so far I haven't had clearance issues out with 235/75/15's(rock to pumpkin clearance, I still have a lot of fender left.) I want a fairly aggressive tread and don't want a lift right now, I'm lifting when it's time to rebuild my suspension. I figure I'll wear out a set of tires before I need bushings real bad. According to what I have read, 31x10.5x15 is the maximum that fits on these SUV's without a lift, and parked next to my dad's '05 level II Ranger they look about right. Anybody know for sure, or should I just mount the Alcoas and brand new BFG AT TA K/O's for a test, given that the Alcoas will even fit over my '91's hubs? I want a more aggressive tread than these anyways, and I know each manufacturer's tires are slightly different in size even when labeled the same. So far I think I am looking at some 30" tires, depending on brand. Hell, I'd gladly run swampers even, as long as they don't kill fuel mileage terribly in say, 215/85/15. I have no concerns for road noise or handling as I do not drive fast or very far on pavement much. If I drive far enough from home I take the damn mini cooper, but avoid driving the cussed thing if I can stand it.
For the masses, A Navajo is roughly the same as a first gen Ford Explorer Sport, but for some reason seems to sit higher by a tick, and I have 3.55 gears with a 5-speed, with a very healthy 4.0.
