I just got done rebuilding the tranny and I must have messed something up. The thing pops out of 3rd and 5th gear when you let off the throttle to coast or slow down then get back on the throttle. As soon as the engine starts applying power the tranny pops into neutral. Does anybody know where I messed up?

The tranny got new bearings, 4th gear syncro, input shaft and i think its called the cluster shaft ( the one in the bottom of the tranny )

sound like your shift fork,, or something simple like a boot or carpet check all around the floor for anything pushin on the shifter... then its time to pull the shifter out and shift (with motor off ) and look around inside before you pull it out sorry about the vagueness if i recall rite 3rrd and 5th are on the same fork (i think) not good with manual trans.. hope this helps a little

The down side with that is I don't have the shifter boot or anything on yet. I'm kinda hoping it might have something to do with the new shifter bushings. I'm pretty sure 3rd and 5th are on different forks. I believe 3rd and 4th are on one fork and 5th and reverse are on another. Thats why im hoping its got something to do with the shifter bushings but I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this and knows if its something internal or ???

How do I contact him? PM?? Or will he see and respond to this post?

No need....

Likeliest cause?
3rd gear you most probably installed a shift collar (the piece the fork operates) backwards.

5th gear? at any time did you disassemble the pivot cam for
the 5th-Reverse bellcrank?

That BIG Torx nut that holds the eccentric shaft to the plate
should NEVER be disturbed...

Thanks for replying.

I drove it for about 40miles yesterday and now 3rd gear seems to be staying in gear. Could something have wore in that its working now? Whould somethign be wrong with 4th gear if I put the 3rd/4th shift collar in backwards? Is there anyway of telling without taking the tranny all apart? I dont remember touching the big torx nut but I might have. I was thinking about it as I was driving it around yesterday and was wondering... Could I have installed the shift collar for 5th and reverse backwards and that's what is causing my problems?

I can't believe I messed this thing up that bad. Normally I'm quite good at this type of stuff.

The guy that the PO had rebuild my tranny put the 3rd/4th forth collar on backwards, it constantly put pressure on the shift fork and ground away the shift fork until it wouldnt push the collar far enough to engage into gear.

Was it shifting odd before it wore out the shift fork? Right now the truck is parked and im driving my dodge so I dont have to worry about wearing out anything but I want to figure out where I all messed up so when I get a chance to pull the tranny I can hopefully get it pulled apart fixed and back in within a night or 2. I don't have much time to work on it since the snowmobiles are always callin my name and the dodge with the plow on is makin me constantly stop at the diesel pump and use up all my money.

O yeah. When I shifted into forth I would have to hold it in to make it stay, and every now and then I would have to skip third because it wouldnt go in. I drained the fluid and it looked like silver paint (from all the aluminum shavings).

So since mine now stays in 3rd and slides into 4th no problem then that collar should be in correctly?? but my 5th/reverse must be in backwards? Once I pull it apart is there a way how to confirm they are right/wrong?

It's Not Backwards

At PlumCrazy:

Your fork isn't in backwards. If it were in backwards the transmission would not have fit together again.

It wore because you rest your arm on the shifter when in fourth gear. It's a really common problem (I know because my '92 Ford Ranger is disassembled in my garage right now, and I'm replacing the 3/4 fork).

So I don't think it's backwards.
