Mazda M50D-R1 swap from 4 banger, will it hold up with a heavy duty clutch behind a 4.0 in a 99?. Once blew fifth gear on a subaru legacy gt.

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think the M5R1 will even bolt up to the 4.0L motor. Bolt patterns are different, and the bell housing is not removable (part of the trans casting). Sorry.

^^ This. You need a trans out of another 4.0. Nothing else will work.

The R1 is the trans that is in the Ranger and Explorers, however the housings are permanent to the body and therefore the 2.3's different from the 3.0's and are different from the 4.0's. The only thing that might work are some of the internals, but AllanD could tell you better.

The internals can be swapped between cases (this is actually a somewhat popular swap. 2.3, 2.9, & 3.0L trannies have shorter 1st, 2nd & 3rd gear ratios than the 4.0L version).
The cases themselves (bellhousings) are not interchangeable between a 2.3L and a 4.0L engine however.

hmmm...so THIS is why every i talk to with a ranger can take off smoothly in 2nd, and i really cant....they all have 2.9s. i have the 4.0....its tough to take off in 2nd unless i'm already rolling a lil.

that depends on gearing, I can creep through stop signs in second gear.

I've driven around for days intentionally not using 1st just to prove I could....

But then again I have 235 tires and run 4.10 gears...
