Hi all,

Just bought a 92 Ranger 4x4 an hour ago from a wholesale lot. Its not even home yet, just gotta wait till my gf gets off work so I can bring it home. Been needing another vehicle and wanted a truck. Picked it up for $1800 from $2600 listed originally. Pretty darn clean inside and out. Does have a small trans leak at the shifter linkage so I gotta look up the seal for that. And either a oil pan leak or rear main, I'll get it cleaned up later and find out for sure. Steering is kinda sloppy, but blows cold AC. Sitting on some run down 33s but I'll probably change that to used 31s soon, probably why the steering is sloppy, and I don't wanna overwork those axles, so till I figure out the gear ratio I'd rather drop the tire size.

That's all I know for now, have buyers high I hope stays that way instead of buyers remorse. I think I had an account here 10 years ago or so when I had a 91 Ranger, but I forget maybe I just creeped.

I'll post more tonight when I bring it home and figure out what's what. Till then I gotta reacquaint myself with the forum, and look up this truck stuff and get my bearings on my new buy!

A dual tank bed on a 2nd gen?

I'm sure you'll laugh but, I didn't notice at all until I read that and scrolled back up to my picture. Haven't even walked outside to go look. Another thing is I didn't even pay attention to which engine it was until after I bought it and went home and decoded the vin. Once I got it home a buddy came over and looked and asked said I've no idea I only read that it was a 4L V6 from the VIN, so we popped the hood and I paid attention for the first time lol! I was too concerned with looking for leaks and random frayed wires, corrosion, rust and all that jazz looking over the truck that I didn't even pause to take notice in the normal stuff :D

Found some other goodies. Complete owners manual, never had one so nice lol. The tires are 33x12.5R15, and the rims help push out the tire so they stick out quite a bit. I love the look, but not enjoying the handling. TBH I'd prefer 31x10.5 and regular rims, at least in its condition. I'ma try to tighten stuff up and check out what can be fixed. Dunno if these steering gear boxes have a tightening bolt, assume it would. Vent fan doesn't blow super hard, dunno if the fan is weak, or if this thing had a cabin filter thing that's plugged. I don't even recall if there was a fresh air/cabin air lever. Its all new. Its bed time.

Edit: Its not my fault, my gf has had friends over since I got home with it, I couldn't even get my me time looking over every square inch of my new truck :P Its cool, I'm off tomorrow, but fishing in the morning with a buddy. But he doesn't know yet, I'm sure I'll get some once overing time tomorrow before we leave lol.

No cabin air filter.
The steering gear box will need to be replaced if it's worn and sloppy. Trying to tighten it up won't end well.
With a new steering gear box, or tie rod ends, or ball joints, whatever is making it feel "loose" - it should be just fine running 33" tires.

It might have a mouse nest in the heater plenum, or just other debris. The blower motor resistor terminals also get rusty on these trucks and stop the fan from running on all speeds.

That's the first thing I noticed... dual tanks.

That truck looks pretty clean... if the bottom side looks good... I might have even paid up little more then what you did to take it home.

Those wheels appear 10 inch wide... no center caps... tires worn out... first thing to go if it were mine. However... I would probably look at 16 x 8 wheels... and 265/75/16's. Those are more of a 32 inch tire.

Either way... as I said earlier... Nice

Very nice. I woulda bought it.

So something I noticed was the rear dual tank cover goes to nothing. Maybe someone put that bed on later. But there's no second tank. Either way its cool if I wanted to! Also found a brake leak L-R wheel cylinder I imagine, dripping from inside the drum. So guess I need to take a look and get one!

Door sticker code says 91 for axles, so a 3.27 gear ratio :( But the tag on the rear diff is painted over so I need to scrape that off and read what that says just in case it was changed. Fooey.

is there a switch somewhere in the cab, maybe they removed the extra tank. a buddy in high school had a chevy with duel tanks, there was a switch on the dash.

Dual tank bed probably came from a gen 1 truck. I’ve thought about cutting out the gas door area from my ranger trailer and putting it on my ‘94, just for the look of dual tanks, don’t really need a 2nd tank with a 4 cyl and the 20 gallon tank I have, even with 4.10’s it goes a long time between fill-ups. Nice truck!
