Maverick fenders

Looks like a wanna-be fast back, haha. Cool car none-the-less. Build thread?!

Not gonna lie, it looks like every panel in those pictures has rust holes in it. Repairing that without replacing the body panels is a shit-load of work...........The trailer it sits on is worth more than the car.If it's worth it to you and you have the deep pockets or the friends with the skills it may be worth fixing the body. Either way fixing all of that is a lot of work if you have an eye for for good body work.

Saw this one for sale two years ago at Good guys. The owner was doing his best to sell it to me while I was taking the pics.

With just a good paint job running $2-10k it is hard to justify restoring ANYTHING. Throw some body work in there along with anything the powertrain might need and a great many cars are better off sent to the crusher.

But then where is the fun in that?:icon_confused:

Or you could pay big $$ out of the hole and re-restore it because the last guy didn't know what he was doing/cut corners.

ive always wonder how the old thrift power sixes preformed, may find one to try in a ranger one day. if your gona restore that car, id focus on the body and just replace removable parts like doors/fenders

It's usually the floorboards and all the "frame" that goes. Looks to be the 8" rear end so did it have the 302? I used one of those Mavrick rear ends under a 289 Courrier 30 years ago, fit and worked great.

Hows the underside look? see if you can get any good pics and I'll tell you if its better then my 66 convertible impala lol:icon_rofl:

From the looks of it...it's not a Grabber. They had the hood with "hood scoops" and black stripes. I think the hood was the only difference.

It did have the hood with the hood scoops and stipes, but the original owner took the hood off and painted it. it has the 302 and a 3 speed, and the 8 inch rear end. Originally it had the 3 on the tree but he converted it to the floor and put a Hurst shifter in it.

The five lug axle is a give-away on the 8" rear, with the right center section, good for 400 hp. Lots of good Mavrick/Comet sites out there. Heres a bunch at a get together.

This is a shot of the most famous Mavrick and where someone got their big start.

The team was so good that NHRA had to re-write the rule book every year. They kept changing the weight to HP and then the wheelbase. This is what Gapp & Roush ended up running.

BigJohn cool then :) I don't think the orig hood was all that awesome but it was cool for a factory piece.

several years ago I saw a guy with a maverick & he actually had the entire front sheet metal from a mustang II which gave it a whole different look. All mercury comets/mavericks twin of the same years had 5 lug suspension regardless if they had 6 cyl or v-8

yah. I know where there is a stock grabber hood sitting next to a whole shell sitting in a corn crib with all the rust fixed on it. the only problem is the guy who owns it thinks it is worth a fortune, wants about $2000 for it.

My buddy wanted to do a drag car when he first got it. we checked all the information we could and found out it was originally a grabber with the 8 inch rear, the only thing that isnt stock is the shifter on the floor.

the nice thing about this is the interior is gutted so it will make doing a street/strip project a little easier.
