Hey all,
I'm in the process of swapping the manual transmission (Mazda M5OD-5 Speed) in my '96 Ranger, and have a question. When I removed the old transmission from the truck, some transmission fluid dumped out of the tail and onto the ground. Since there isn't any sort of dip stick obviously, and I can't seem to find a fill point, where, and how much transmission fluid do I add in the replacement transmission? I've even consulted the Chilton's manual, and it tells me how to remove and reinstall the transmission, but nothing really about servicing a manual model. :(

There should be a fill point on the left side of the tranny, about half-way up on the left side, you should just fill it up until it comes out of the fill hole, but get another opinion because it might be slightly different on my M50D-R1.

There's 2 big bolt heads on the left side of the trans, the bottom one is the drain, the upper one is the fill. Drain the trans and get 3 quarts of Mercon ATF and fill it till it comes out the fill hole.

Ok sounds great! It should be fairly easy since the transmission is still out of the truck and I have the transmission hump cut out of the truck. I can just take the top access panel off of the transmission and fill it up as needed. There is a plastic almost funnel looking thing inside of the transmission by the gears, is that associated with the fluid fill?

They are fairly easy to find considering that one is labeled "FILL" and the other labeled "DRAIN" in 10mm tall cast-into-the-case letters

But if your trans is caked with mud....

Yea, IIRC they have a 15/16" head on them.

Sounds easy enough. How hard or easy should the trans be to shift gears while out of the truck? It seems like I cannot shift so I want to be sure that I have the shifter and shifting forks lined up correctly when I put the top access panel on.

Make sure all the "Gates" in the top cover are in neutral
and that all the shift collars are in neutral and it drops right on.

Are there markings or some sort of signification that shows they are in neutral?

Think about how a shifter works. You want the "hole" in the middle. If you're looking straight down on it, you will see 2 raised sides with a drop down in the middle. Just mess with it until the output shaft on the back of the tranny spins freely
