Well, I´m little bored about manual transmission, and I feel that auto are better for rocks and hill cracks.
I have de M5OD-R1 4x4 on a 4.0 97 ranger, and want to swap it. But, I want something close to bolt on. Are the explorer trannies an alternative? maybe with a tranpack kit or something? or maybe exists another auto tranny that I could use?

Thanks for your help!

a 4R55E bolts in...but theres a lot more to it then that.

you'll need the computer from an auto, 4.0 truck, and the wiring harness for the transmission (routing that will be fun).

do a search for "transmission trouble" and see how many posts there are....auto trannys suck in general...but particularly the ones used in RBVs.

X2, manual is way better especially for crawling.

You'd switch the auto tranny out about as often, if not more often, as a clutch in you manual tranny. RBV tranny's are meant for any type of abuse.

if i were to do it i would build up a C4, but thats a old trans, non-overdrive and im not sure that would even be a sure thing. maybe a adaptor and a gm 700R4.

good choice...reliability is most important to me and nothing beats a manual transmission for reliability.

Are they really that bad? We have three Ford dealerships and I cannot find any trouble with newer Ranger tranny's that are serviced properly.

The newer 5R55E trannys ( 2002 - 2008 ) are good. The 4R44E/5R55E (1995-2001) are OK with the valve body upgrade. The A4LD are alright with stock trucks doing light duty work ( the LD in A4LD !! ) but are questionable with larger than stock tires.

Reviving this topic...some questions:

What list of parts do I need to make this swap? (Ecu, wiring, etc...)
The transgo kits are good? I mean, they gave strength to the trans?
Is the 4R44E really bad?
Wiring harness could be a PITA?

Personally, I think auto´s are better for rock crawling and cracks (personal opinion). There is an experience in this swap?

Thanks in advance!

The 5R55E is a better choice for an automatic transmission than the 4R55E is.

The wiring harness isn't bad once there is no transmission in the truck. There is 2 plugs on the rear of the engine that the wiring harness connects too....

here is the parts list you will need:
- auto transmission
- auto transmission dust plate (between engine and transmission)
- auto transmission PCM (computer)
- auto transmission brake pedal assembly
- auto transmission steering column
- auto transmission shifter linkage
- auto transmission floor plate
- auto transmission starter
- auto transmission flywheel
- auto transmission wiring harness
- new flywheel bolts

i have all the parts you need minus the steering column, wiring harness & starter if you are interested....PM me if you are

One question. Are this parts the same in al a4ld?

Pato,
