manual hubs question

Stick locked or unlocked? I guess maybe if water gets in them or they are damaged...

What's the problem?

left my driveway with both hubs locked in started sliding in the snow a bit so put it in to 4WD and putzed down the road got bout to the end and put the T-case back into 2WD an stopped for the stop sign then pulled across the highway and turned into the far lane and the left hub clunked and seemed to drag like it was hanging up an still trying to turn the axles and diff and such.

it also seems to have not locked in right away to now that i recall. when the hub is locked and t case in 4wd it should instantly turn correct?

If the driveline is under tension the hubs won't release.

Same for the shift collar inside the T-case

It's possible for them to stick. If you're sure that it wasn't just under tension like Allan mentioned, check for too much grease inside of the hubs. When I first got my ranger, I changed out the wheel bearings and packed the manual hubs with grease. It was fine in the summer, but come winter, the cold thickened the grease up and they would often stick or freeze up enough that you couldn't even turn the knob. I cleaned out the excess grease and it worked fine.

i make it a point to put it in reverse and back up at least 20-30 ft. after UN-locking the hubs to release the torque/tension. used to have to do that on the auto hubs on one of my old scouts and just kept the habit with both manual or auto hubs. i've never had a problem like you're describing. just a thought. good luck!

I do that when I put the push button transfer case also. It seems to go into 2wd easier that way. Most of the time the hubs stay locked.

how could i tell if its under tesion?

You can't really... Most you can do is back up for a few feet like strvger mentioned. This should release any bind that might be preventing them from disengaging.

il go play round with it in the parking lot in the Am and report the results

wait do you have auto hubs or manual

ok guys i went and put em through the tests an they seem to be working without doing what it did before.

maybe it was grease in the hub? also not sure but i thought i heard a plasticy clicking from it.
