Manual gear vs. power gear

I have a theory, is a manual steering gear heavier duty than a power one? I found out that manual ones cost more than power ones. It would make sense though, right? The power gear is assisted hydraulically so it probably doesn't need to be as strong as a manual one.

I don't think so. I think it's more expensive simply because there's not as much demand for it. Being hydraulically assisted doesn't mean anything. It takes a certain amount of force to make the tires turn, it doesn't matter if it's manual or power. The only difference is with a manual box, the driver is supplying all of that force. With a power box, some of that force is coming from the driver, and most of it is coming from the PS pump. But either way, the box receives ALL of that force and uses it to turn the tires.

I have a manual box, too. I love it!

Though, I can't say how strong they are; exbass pretty much summed what I think about it, too.


However, if there is a lot of damage being taken on the actual unit itself for some reason, I would speculate that the manual box would be better suited because it doesn't have any hoses or lines to be broken or split. I know that a manual box is a lot easier to operate than a power unit with no hydraulic pressure.
