who prefers one over another? and what are the advantages of having one or the others? and when it comes to more performance upgrades which one would have the better benefits.

Manual allow more rpm and therefore power control, but the autos (with trans cooler) will provide more towing / haul capacity if driven correctly (lock-out O/D and good throttle control).

drove both bought a 5spd 06. the autos have no power at all. the 3.0 lacks power under 3000rpm. the 5spd gives you the ability to get the hp outta her.

I prefer the 5 spd, i still have my 93 splash 4wd 5 spd. Had a 01 ext cab ranger 4wd with a 3" BL and 33x12.50s. The 01 was nice to drive around, but the 5spd gave me more control of my power and gears. 5spd is the way for me, dont get me wrong, autos are nice when you get those days where you just dont feel like shifting gears, but i'm the type of person that jumps into ANY vehicle and slam my left foot to the floor and reach for the shifter(even tho the vehicle might be an auto) lol.

Ive got a 2001 Ford Ranger XLT with the 3.0L V6 engine, Ive got the 5 speed Manual transmission version, and I actually did a test with my buddy who has a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge (3.0L as well) that has an Automatic transmission. We raced eathother down a long flat dirt road in the country one day. Keep in mind we both have performance catback exhaust systems, K&N cold air intakes, and JET Performance Programmers, but overall, my Ranger did jump out in front from the very start, but my buddy was right on my tail the entire race, I beat him of course, but I only beat by a car length. This proves that the 5 speed Manual Transmission definately has more get up and go than the Automatic trannys.

Call me Sally then. I've always perferred an automatic unless it's in a motorcycle. :)

the manual definetly more performance... if your looking to drag and do bracket racing... auto all the way... you will get mor consistant times... but the manual is ALWAYS more fun... i have a 92 tbird 5.0 that i run down the track from time to time... ive been contemplatig a 5spd swap i have all the parts.. just not sure if its worth the hassle my auto has a b&m shift kit and 3000 stall converter so its still fun! but i absolutley prefer driving a manual...

I don't know HOW to drive an auto, so I got the 5-speed. :icon_thumby:

Besides, it's now the rainy season, and you can't do a controlled 360 (or 720) without a clutch, right? (Look for me on YouTube... :shok: )

Always remember: If you're not in gear, you're not in CONTROL, and with an auto, you're never really "in" gear... you're just in some sort of vague, mushy, part-time relationship with your drive wheels. :icon_rofl:

I have not drove the std. but my auto i love.
People say you get more mpg on a std but mines doing amazing i get about 30 mpg city
