Mankind is reaching the extremes of laziness

I think that's a terrible idea. Our human brains have a response to danger that no machine could reproduce. And unlike a drone, this thing could be right next to you in traffic. And what happens if the computer has a glitch, people die. I think it's scary

Good point, but............any machine has that same possibility of a glitch that can result in harming people, heck People have glitches that cause them to hurt or kill other people.
So not just computer glitch, could be throttle glitch or brake glitch, even blowouts can cause deaths.
But IMO, there would be far fewer computer glitches than the now occurring human errors that cause accidents, up to and including texting while driving, they "made a new fool", lol.

Read a short story years ago, can't remember where but it stuck with me.
Short version:
Aliens finally showed up and landed on earth
They were friendly and offered to share their technology with us.
They had a transporter device that could move people and goods almost instantly from place to place in the US.
Only problem was that in order to use it 33,000 people had to be executed every year, the execution lottery had to be random, and had to include ages 0 to 100, no one gets immunity, your number comes up and without warning you would be killed.

"Oh my God, that is cruel and completely unacceptable, how could you even suggest that!!!"

U.S. motor vehicle deaths in 2012, 33,561 people
That is what we sacrifice for quicker and more comfortable transport.
33,000 people of random ages, so how unreasonable is that "Alien Transport"?

We all agree to this as acceptable losses for our convenience and comfort.

I personally feel that removing human error from driving would lead to fewer deaths on the roads, dieing from a computer glitch or from someone adding an "LOL" at end of a text doesn't make any difference to the person who is dead.

How bout not giving licenses to bad drivers. Problem solved. But nooooo, it has to be easy to get an license because everyone deserves one.

Bullshit. Need stricter licensing requirements.

The automakers would never let that happen... Less drivers = less vehicles sold.

If the government wanted to, they could. Although, in america then government is the auto maker.

Up here in Canada, not the case. I don't care what y'all down there do. I don't drive down there.

I think "bad driver" would be open to interpretation, lol.

People often tag someone as a "bad driver" if they don't drive the same as you.
And "they" may think you are the "bad driver" since you don't drive like they do.

Drivers license can be taken away from some one in Canada, in the US there is a "lively hood" right to work license that is often granted to those who should lose their license, even those convicted of DUI can often get a "work license", which I don't agree with.

With automated vehicles it would be a moot point, computer obeys the rules of the road, no human decisions on which rules to obey and when, lol.
This would piss off "bad drivers" not good drivers.

My pet peeve about a "bad driver" would be when I want to change lanes or merge on to highway.
I signal when there is a gap in traffic for me to pull into.
Then the "bad driver" behind me in that other lane accelerates to block me pulling into that lane.
WTF??
Here is someone who "doesn't play well with others", a requirement, IMO, when you "share the road" with other drivers.
A Drivers license means you accept the fact and learned the rules to "share the road" with other drivers, it doesn't mean you know how to drive a vehicle.
You can teach a monkey or even a dog(saw the video) to drive, but they would not understand the concept of "sharing the road".
I am not comparing a "bad driver" to a monkey or dog, that would be unfair to the monkey and dog, since I wouldn't expect them to grasp the concept.

And I think when there are two or more lanes, in the same direction of travel, on a highway, the left lane should be designated as Passing Only and posted as such.
Most of the countries in Europe I have driven in have this posted, and it made travel much safer and quicker.

I'll just sit back and watch this one and wait on the computer wiz that hacks into the system that controls these so called smart cars and causes mass accidents. Or better yet just turns them all off!! Now that would be funny.

Yes, kind of like human drivers in fog.................
Biggest one in the US is 216 vehicles, Nov. 2002, Interstate 710 in Los Angeles County, California, due to dense fog, no deaths 41 injured

Or 200 vehicles in Jan. 2005, Interstate 96 in Ingham County, Michigan, due to dense fog leaving 2 dead and 35 injured.

Dozen more involving 30+ vehicles.

Like everything there is an upside and a downside.
Fuel injection and electronic spark system is so much more reliable than carb and points, it can't even be argued about which is better.
BUT when there is a problem with fuel injection or electronic spark you need a new skill set to find the problem.

And as far as hacking into automated cars, that would be a human error not the fault of the computer running the car............so moot as far as which is better, human control or computer control.

I wouldn't want a computer running my life, lol, but I certainly don't mind it running my fuel injection and spark, and driving if programming is done well.
