Man, Sure do like those F-250 super dutys with the Diesel motor

I do love my Superduty with the 7.3 and 6 speed manual :D

I would love to have a Super Duty with the 6.0L and a 6-speed. But then again, I probably couldn't afford to keep tires on it.

:not_i:

Never seen an Isuzu box truck with a V8.

I think Duramax has led the pack for the whole decade. They might not be the best--I can't say. But they are meeting emissions with the biggest numbers. I think they have had 360 and 660 for a couple of years and everyone else has just moved up to 350 650 with their latest displacement increases. I guess, in the alleged words of Nathaniel Bedfor Forrest--GM got there (in 2001) firstest with the mostest.

I want to point something else out. Someone said GM wasn't a contender in the early game. That's just wrong.

GM invented the diesel pickup. Dodge tried a very brief and limited stint with a 4-liter Mistubishi in their full-size--it was a 100hp, 160ft# motor--in '78 and '79. Then they let it go for 9 years. GM tried their Olds 403 based 5.7 diesel in 1500 2wd pickups in '80 and '81. They saw the writing on the wall and had Detroit Diesel design a new engine from ground up--designed for maximum economy, to fit all existing truck platforms. It was the 6.2 and was released in the '82 model year and ran all the way to right now. It's still built, with a displacement increase occuring in '92. Every part will exchange from 26 years of productions and the new ones will make 350hp and 600ft# with the same indirect injection they always had and the compression lowered to 18-1. What other engine lasted 26 years? And is still going strong... Installed in everything for 30mpg 2wd pickups to 14,000# motorhomes--maybe a hundred thousand military vehicles alone. And postal servie trucks, step vans, buses, generators, construction equipment--the same piece of shit 6.2 diesel everyone kicked sand in its face. Nothing has ever lasted like this. Same fuel system. Same everything.

Yeah, the small niche market of diesel pickup has passed it by, but it started the entire game. Without the 6.2's success, nobody else would have ventured into the playing field--and nobody else risked designing their own either--the other players did timid experiments by buying other peoples engines.

Here's the modern 6.2--meet the new motor, 90% the same and interchangable with the old motor.

I borrowed this a couple times from Sam. 7.3 6-speed. It's a beautiful truck--like a Bentley sailing down the highway--except nicer inside maybe. I didn't like first gear. Something about going from first to second was bad. Also, it had no power unless the cruise was set. Pretty annoying when trying to accelerate onto the beltway. It wouldn't go over hills unless the cruise was set. It took me a while to figure that out--having to downshift on a minor grade with only 6 or 7K on it was annoying. Then I realized that if you punch the cruise button--WHOOSH--you're up and over anything in OD. Needs that feature bypassed, that's fo' sho'. I like to mash the gas and go. But there's a lot of guilt associated with driving such a nice truck. I wear my vinyl bench seats and steel headliner like a hair shirt.

He must have the only 6.4 that gets 19 mpg. Most of those trucks average about 12 mpg from what I've gathered. :no2:

That dually I posted got 16 empty and 12 pulling anything I used it for--that K30 you see there from Delaware to Indy, a 65 Mustang from New York City to Indy and my B2 to Wellsville and back. That's enough to get a good sampling I think. I think all the new trucks are suffering economy losses to make emissions.

I've got a best of 18 so far with my truck with a worst of 13.4 while towing. I towed a 4x4 Tacoma to Idaho I averaged 14.9 mpg. On the way back I had a an old 59 Datsun in tow and sqeezed out 16.7 mpg. I was pretty dang happy with those numbers. Really got me thinkin about towing the wheeling rig out for the 10 year anniversery.

Actually will i said i liked the 6.2L....just not as much as i liked the 6.9L int'l :)....and i dont know if isuzu runs the 6.6L in there box trucks, but it is designed by them.My buddy has a duramax, and with enough money dumped in it it runs real good, but another guy i know has a powerchoke (6.0L) with about half the money invested and it runs better, and another buddy has a cummins that will smoke them all with just a pump and chip.Call me dumb or whatever, but i wont be jumping on the diesel bandwagon any time soon. I had a Cummins, and i wasnt all impressed compared to say, Dodges 8.0L V10.Ill stick to my 78 Ford F350 with a 400. Atleast i know i can go to any junkyard on any given day and gets parts, they'll be cheap, and i can put them on. Yeah, 6MPG sucks, but forking over 40K for a comparable truck to do the same job this one will do makes no sense to me just to be able to blow smoke and have leather seats.

later,
Dustin

I still love gas motors, and still think gas trucks are great, but I won't be trading in my PSD anytime soon for a gasser. The power/fuel mileage is so superior I just cant see going back. I didn't pay $40K, or even $20K for my truck either. On a side note, why the hell is your 400 only getting 6mpg? My 79 Bronco with 4.11's and 35" Hawgs would pull 10mpg if I was easy on it.

well i kinda have to disagree with you there. I have a chip, drop in filter and exhaust on my truck and has a hard time getting beat by my buddys cummings that is just like mine but with the addition of injects, a bigger chip (allows for more power), turbo and trans and i can still walk away from him. I am not a chevy guy but will buy what it a good deal at the time. I know alot about these chevy diesels though and duramax can put out a ton of power with little mods compared to the powerstroke and cummings. 40K? i dont think so, maybe new but i paid 18K for mine with 80,000 on it at the time two and a half years ago.

Diesel are not that hard to work on nor are they that expensive if you can work on them. Mine may have alot of electronics on it but its still has pistons, rods, a crank, heads, valves, ect.. just like any other motor. once you learn how it works and how they are put together they are really simple, just like a gas motor. I have done the head gaskets, and injectors on my truck no prob. just takes a little know how and dont let it scare you cause its different.

I'll bet that topper eats up about 2mpg's, ought to get one of those kewl air foils the RVer's use.
