Has anyone tried using an inner tube as a camp chair? Really it would be awesome for backpacking because it compresses down so small. Just gotta keep it a safe distance for flame and not to set it on some sharp rocks. Something designed for swimming, not a tire tube.

My dad has a chair that weighs less than a pound for backpacking. Sure it compresses down small but how do you suppose you pump it up when your in the middle of no where?

I've got an extensive history in backpacking. When we went extreme minimalist we used a square piece of foam from a ground mat. Either that or the simple tripod-style camp chair always worked well.

The only frustrating thing about the inner tube is that you can't always get comfortable and eat your food in a good position. I got tubing on the rivers here and they call it tubing a lazy sport, but it sure can be a heck of an ab-workout.

Back in the '70s in my first apartment with no money for such things we needed a place to sit. We got 2 big truck inner tubes and 2 car inner tubes. Stick the small tube into the center of the big tube for a back rest and good to go. Just have to watch for the valve stem. Used those two chairs even after we got a real couch and chairs.

I just roll a log over.. or sit in the dirt it doesnt bother me

this is on my list of things to buy for backpacking. http://www.crazycreek.com/products-page/adventure-line-chairs/hex-2-0-powerlounger/

it looks crappy but it is the most comfortable backpacking chair i have ever sat in. pricey too. but sooooooooo comfy. its nice to have a chair with back support after hiking all day. i hate being bent over trying to cook my food from sitting on a log.

a hammock also works.... its lighter than a tent.

Walmart sells that same sorta thing for like $10. Typically advertised as a stadium seat.

As a replacement for a tent, a hammock has its upsides and downsides. As a replacement for a chair, its pretty sub par. Rarely can you hang a hammock in just the right spot to sit around the fire, and it doesn't have that much desired back support.

Also, why has nobody mentioned just a good ol' inflatable chair? Also available for $10 and has all the same features as a tube, plus the whole part where its actually shaped like a chair.
